For many users, how much real lock-in is there, beyond the fact that
they simply don't know of alternatives? If someone just uses their
computer for browsing and email, they can use any operating system.
OpenOffice facilitates moving to other platforms, because it's not just
Windows only. How many applications are there that are not available
for Linux (including alternative packages), can't run in Wine or
Crossover Office, can't be run on Windows in a virtual machine or
accessed remotely, using VNC, RDC etc. There are plenty of
alternatives. People just have to be made aware of them and the
resulting benefits. Also, the more people switch to alternatives, the
more likely there will be more alternatives.
