How is BYU detecting port scans? Sequential port accesses on the same IP
address within a given period of time? I think that nmap (
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/data/nmap_manpage.html ) allows stealth scans
that randomize the port order/time as to avoid detection by automated
warning systems.

It's only wrong it you get caught.
