Counterpoint: despite plugging things into surge protectors, I have had several routers and modems destroyed by lightning during thunderstorms. I would not want to be replacing those routers and modems out of pocket, so I gladly rent the equipment. Also, it is easier to upgrade to newer equipment when you are renting it from the cable company, and it only costs a few bucks a month for me.
