I buy my own router but use the modem provided by my cable company. I know others who also get their router through the cable company. I'm sure it's a money maker for the cable companies, otherwise why would they do it, but I don't think I'd consider it a rip off. If someone is willing to spend that money to get more piece of mind, especially for something that's become as critical as access to the internet, I'm not the one to tell them it's a rip off.
