A coffin was left lying in the road after a car crash in
Chile because police and passers-by thought it was
a surreal art performance. A car carrying the body
of Nelson Contreras was hit by a truck in Eistein,
leaving the coffin and flowers in the street. It was
thought to be an art installation in homage to surreal
painter Roberto Matta Echaurren, who had died that
day. No-one helped the Contreras family to pick up
the coffin or gather the scattered flowers. Osvaldo
Brandt, nephew of the dead man: "The whole thing
was surreal. The truck hit us so hard the coffin and
all the flowers came down in the middle of the road.
After almost one hour we managed to get a cab, put
the coffin inside and continue our way to the cemetery."
And here's more bizarre coffin news... :-)
A Brazilian family have had to move out of their home
after a flood brought human remains and coffins into
their house. It happened after heavy rains destroyed a
cemetery in the Duque de Caxias area of Rio de
Janeiro. Human limbs, bones and pieces of coffin
were washed up in the house. A cemetery worker:
"Part of the cemetery wall collapsed and land mixed
with body parts and coffins went right into the nearest
house." According to neighbours, the family had to
leave their home to wait for the mess to be cleaned.
Cambodian police have questioned and released
a woman accused of nailing her daughter's foot to
the floor. The woman is alleged to have done it as
punishment for her not doing any housework. Officers
said they released her after she promised not to
abuse her children anymore. Ouch :-)
