Cartoon superhero Buzz Lightyear has helped bring a
shoplifter to justice after alerting police to his whereabouts.
A court heard how Shaun Markey fled from Hereford with
a battery-operated model of the Toy Story character. The
27-year-old appeared to have evaded capture by hiding
under Great Western Way bridge on the south of the city.
But as officers and a police dog searched the area, his
cover was blown as the toy cried: "Buzz Lightyear.
Permission to engage." Buzz is normally assigned to
protect the galaxy from the threat of invasion by the Evil
Emperor Zurg, the sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance.
A DIY store in Germany has fitted electronic alarms to
toilet rolls in its lavatories because customers keep
stealing them. Managers at the Baumarkt store in Koethen,
Sachsen-Anhalt, took action because of the number of
customers taking toilet rolls home with them. One
manager said he was fed up with having to replace
dozens of toilet rolls each day. He commented: "It was
not only annoying for us, but uncomfortable for other
customers who were left without paper."
A Romanian man whose wife had given birth to a
daughter tried to bribe maternity nurses to swap her
for a boy. The man from Grajduri, in Iasi county, said
he always wanted a boy and that "girls are more
expensive". He refused to take his wife and daughter
home and asked the hospital for a replacement baby.
Dr Stefan Busureanu from the Elena Doamna Maternity
in Iasi told the Libertatea newspaper that hospital staff
had refused his request. He said: "The man came to
us with this unusual claim but we cannot change babies
even if their parents would want such a thing."
