If nobody gets to see it then it's just a bunch of crc's for the roms. We could never test if it works & the changes that have happened recently have proved we need to be able to do this. We're here to preserve the contents of the roms & to document the hardware, emulation allows you to verify that the rom contents are ok. If the roms are made available to the whole mame team then you would need to get everyone involved to promise not to give them out to anyone ( and make sure their computers are never accessed by someone else ). FWIW I really can't see that happening, there are too many lurkers & non mame team members that have access. I can't guarantee that we or someone else doesn't already have a dump of the roms, someone may never have bothered to get it working before. There was a new bootleg scramble added a few versions ago that had been sitting around for years, so the archive on mame.dk may have made it in from somewhere else. Although there aren't many non-emulation sites now, there was a time when you may have come across roms that have never been emulated or even known of. A common tactic a while back was to run a copy of cmpro against a directory full of roms downloaded from the net over a number of years ( not me, I don't like cmpro... ), nowadays there is less chance of finding something but you never know. Also people outside of the mame team ( and I have specific people in mind that you probably know ) go to great lengths to have a complete set & swap roms they may have gotten through a friend of a friend to do so. For these "collectors", it's then not always easy to remember just which ones you were told "I can let you have it, but don't pass it on" & once it's gone down a few people they probably don't care either. If you don't want make roms available then thats up to you. We've had a similar situation with SafeStuff.com, there are games that he doesn't want to be emulated ( probably because he's hoping to make a killing when he sells the boards ). Some people sell the boards first, others just eat the price drop ( although now people have heard of the game they might even want to buy it ). It's nothing personal, I don't believe OG was accusing you of trying to be l337. However we've had issues in the past with people distributing fake rom sets when MAME supports a game that they don't have the roms for. It's just plain easier to not include them in the official versions. Dumping roms and getting them emulated to verify the roms are ok but not submitting them is very common, you really don't want to tell people about it though unless you want to be swamped with requests.
