Re: [Flexradio] Why not a best guess on ship dates?
I think you hinted at the answer to your own question; no matter how often Flex uses the word estimated, proposed or expected when it comes to shipping dates, people will consider those dates to be carved in stone and they will become irate if those dates aren't met. I understand Flex's need to generate excitement and pre-orders as early as they can, but considering the amount of dissatisfaction it can generate, if I ran Flex I'd be tempted not say a word about a new product until it was field tested and I had enough of them in stock to fulfill orders the day the product is announced. Elecraft plays the same game for the same reason and I see the same frustration developing after early product announcements are made. All this aside, the frustration of waiting for a new Flex radio really is trivial compared to being on a waiting list for a new liver. I hope that particular wait goes quickly for you! 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS From: Gordon P. I've been looking at all the comments from people, some saying their radios are going to ship, others just wondering if they ever will. I fall into the second category. I had hoped my 6700 would be here in time for FD, but in looking at the order numbers received so far, I am at least 150 away, despite having gotten on the signature list on May 22, 2012. My number is 3790. Perhaps Tim or one of the Flex folks could comment on why there cannot be some sort of listing, perhaps by by invoice number, or perhaps just noting that the next XXX radios that SHOULD ship by XX date and note that the list is subject to change. I am not asking for anything set in concrete just an estimate so I might make arrangements to be at home when Matt calls. Or perhaps the notification method is backwards, send me an email so that I don't have to be sitting on the keyboard at just the right time to get notified. I CAN call you back. Or, with your email confirmation I can call the credit card company and make the necessary arrangements on receipt. I don't want to sound like I am throwing any rocks at Flex, I am a fully committed user with 1500, 3000, and 5000 radios in my shack. Flex is a unique company in this day and age and I have been impressed both with the engineering and the customer service. I can understand the difficulty in ramping up a new production item, however I think FlexRadio needs to be a bit more sensitive to those of use who are still waiting and have been for more than a year. Without the loyal customer base that they have, sales would not be so great, so please, guys, take a little time to give many of us a rough idea of when we might expect to get excited. Perhaps that is too much to ask with everything else going on in Texas, but it sure would be nice to have a firmer idea when the tunnel will end. I know you are concerned that such a list would cause people to get even more riled up when you didn't make a proposed date, but I think that just saying what I have noted above would be somewhat comforting and not likely to generate a storm of calls and emails over and above what you are already getting. This wait process is at least as bad as the other one that I am in the middle of -- a call from the University of Virginia Transplant Center notifying me that they have a liver for me and get my backside moving North -- NOW! My only hope is that Flex continues to produce affordable transceivers and not just megabuck rigs that are totally beyond my reach. How long before it's parts become an issue--and it's no longer made? And following this to it's logical conclusion, how long will Flex be able to continue supporting legacy models like the 5000, 1000, and others within the software? At some point, it becomes an unbearable challenge. Stop advertising that you'll have a new radio every time new software comes out, and instead, let SDR's compete side-by-side on their own considerable merits. Just heard Alinco is coming out with a 100 watt SDR next year. How long before Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood begin to offer SDR models too? Re: [Flexradio] Eham review - K1EL VLF Converter and its Use with FlexRadios
Hi Terry, There are sixteen longwave broadcast frequencies between 153 kHz and 279 kHz, spaced 9 kHz apart (except for 177 and 183, which have remained on some older layout). Several of the stations are reasonably strong here in Ontario (I'm in Newmarket) but less so than most shortwave broadcasters. All stations broadcast in their local languages, so you'll only find English on 198 kHz (BBC) and 252 kHz (Ireland). When conditions are good and quiet (low K-Index) then the band wil open up a little and you can hear multiple stations on each frequency and weaker stations from eastern Europe and Russia fading in. In addition to broadcasters there are Navtex weather broadcasts to shipping on 518 kHz, and DGPS (differential GPS) stations that support shipping navigation. There are time stations on 60 kHz and 77 kHz and naval communications in encrypted digital modes down even lower. I have had good luck with my Flex-1500 and a 500 kHz lowpass filter I built to keep the mediumwave broadcasters out. Re: [Flexradio] 2nd request-Heros
The front end of the 5K isn't an issue if you are using a receive converter. The front end of the converter is what you have to be concerned about, specifically, it would be best if the converter had it's own low pass filter to prevent overload from local mediumwave stations. The converter output is in the 3.5 to 4 MHz or the 4 to 4.5 MHz bands...where the 5K has it's own filters. 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS On 2013-01-13 8:49 PM, Bob Kay wrote: I too have considered their VLF converter, but after experiencing the rather broad front end of the 5K in that part of the spectrum, I'm cautiously not expecting too much. Re: [Flexradio] Newbie with some Questions
Hi Martin, One of the main differences between a Flex 1500 and the 3000 or 5000 is that the 1500 communicates with your computer via a USB cable. The 3000/5000 both use Firewire, and they can be particular about which Firewire chipset is used. As far as putting a load on the computer is concerned I don't know if a Flex 1500 + PowerSDR software will put less of a load on the computer than a 3000/5000. There are people here who will know this and hopefully they will jump in soon. I would try it on the computer you have, but be prepared to upgrade your computer to something more powerful. Someone already recommended a quad core machine. That's what I did; it's sound advice. You can use PowerSDR in Demo mode by downloading and installing it. When you run it without a Flex transceiver connected it will see this and open a window that lets you run it in Demo mode. I haven't tried this myself, but the capability is there. Using RTTY should be no different than using PSK-31 or other digital modes. The RTTY software will generate the tones and they'll be sent to the Flex as an audio input, just the same as PSK. It's all audio as far as the transceiver is concerned. I can't speak to the CW latency issues, except to say that I hear it gets better with improvements in the software, and that the best way to send CW with no latency problems is to use an external keyer. There are several amplifier options that will give you 100W output. Unfortunately, those website links are on another computer and I'm currently at work. I'll see if I can get them to you later. I hope the rest of this helps! 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS From: Martin Bluhm w8ak...@gmail.com To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Wednesday, April 4, 2012 10:00:03 AM Subject: [Flexradio] Newbie with some Questions Good Morning, I recently had to part with my radio and decided that this was a good time to bring my station into the 21st century. All the computers are running XP SP3. I looked at the 3000; but that would necessitate purchasing a new computer. etc. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump that far into the pool. Question 1: I'm primarily a rtty contester/dx person. I've been through the videos/faqs etc; however, I see no mention of anybody utilizing rtty on sdr. PSK yes, rtty no. Along this line, I also do cw. Reading the eham reviews, I noted a latency in cw operations. Some of the posts (reviews) were older, I was wondering if the latency problem has been resolved in the newer versions of PowerSDR. Comments? Also on the eham reviews, one poster mentioned that there was a demo version of PowerSDR available for people to become familar with it. I cannot find it. Is it still available? Question 2: I have a Ameritron ALS 600 amp available. I turned my present radio (IC735 backup) down to 5 watts and ran it into the amp. I got 45 - 50 watts out of the amp which I figgered was about normal. I would be interested in a 100 watt amp to put behind the 1500. Are such animals available? A 100 watts will do me just fine. Basically, that is my first of many questions. I'm hitting the web site for answers to most of them and the videos are a great help. Any recommendations, etc are more than welcome to a new kid on the block. Cool idea Mike, even though I only have a vertical, which is always pointed in the right (or wrong) direction! [Flexradio] My FlexControl Doesn't
Just picked up my new FlexControl at the local dealer after a wait of several weeks. I plugged it in and watched the drivers install and now all it does is sit there with all three light lit. Nothing works. I did install DDutil and some virtual serial port software, which I don't need at the moment, and rebooted the computer and plugged the FlexControl back in. Still nothing. The Auto-Detect box in the FlexControl Settings window is checked. I don't see anything in any of the PowerSDR Setup tabs that has to do with the FlexControl. This is too simple and yet it doesn't work, which means I'm going to look foolish again when I get it going. I can live with that if someone can steer me in the right direction. [Flexradio] FlexControl - it works now!
Step 1 in the Quick Start Guide says to install PowerSDR. I assumed that was for a new install, and that this wasn't necessary if it was already installed. I see now that existing versions of PowerSDR must be uninstalled and then reinstalled. That seems like a kludge way of doing things? What's the harm in having FlexControl drivers and capability already there with any installation so all one has to do is plug the FlexControl in and go? I mean, if you have to uninstall and reinstall then why is the FlexControl menu even displayed if the FlexControl option wasn't selected during installation? It's deceiving. How about adding a note to the Quick Start Guide saying that previous PSDR installations must be uninstalled and re-installed so that FlexControl capability becomes available? Re: [Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antennamodels
I can only speak from the experiences I have with my 1500 and my previous general coverage receiver, which was an AOR AR-7030+. I used the 7030 many times with beverages from 500 to 1500 ft long and have only used the 1500 with lowpass filter and a Wellbrook wideband active loop. In my brief experience with the Flex 1500 + lowpass filter + loop combination I'd have to say that it compares very favourably favourably with my 7030 and a beverage as far as being able to hear things goes. There's no comparison when it comes to filters and noise blankers; the Flex wins hands down! This doesn't seem to apply to other Flex models, so I guess I'm just lucky. I think the up converter is probably the superior solution for 3000s and 5000s but I think a lowpass filter will serve me nicely, 73, Ken VE3HLS From: Robert Costa, KB6QXM kb6...@yahoo.com To: Chuck Oapos;Neal cdon...@comcast.net; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 4:33:07 PM Subject: Re: [Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antennamodels It is good to see many hams working on this project. I have two Clifton Labs filters, one is the BCB reject filter mentioned below and a second custom low pass filter I had made by Clifton La bs with a 3 dB corner at 85 0 KHz. This second filter allows my Flex 5000A to cover the low end of the BCB with no images, down to 500 KHz from about 850 KHZ where the images appear to start up pretty badly. As noted by Jordan, the BCB band reject filter still allows stuff from above the BCB to to get in and produce lots of false signals below 500 KHz. I can hear 160M amateur signals there with the BCB reject filter in. When I run both the 830KHz low pass filter and the BCB reject filter in series, ALL the false signals and images go away. Nothing left but actual signals from 500 KHz down to about 250 KHz where images from below 500 KHz begin to start up. I think another low pass filter at around 275 KHz would allow reception down lower yet. With all these filters, I think a down converter is probably best in the end. Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - REAL DX
Hi All, I'm not sure what kind of parameters you'd like to be able to adjust Brian. I think that if you put a good filter at the antenna jack and get rid of the AM broadcasters then your Flex can easily do the rest. I have already built a lowpass filter that cleans the longwave band of any AM broadcast interference. A bandpass filter is more difficult to do; it's not as forgiving of variations in component values so trimmer capacitors would have to be added to get it set up correctly, which makes it more expensive to build. It seems to me one only benefits from a bandpass filter if one lives in parts of the world where Loran-C is still operating, or where the longwave broadcast band is still active, i.e., not North America. Otherwise, the lowpass filter lets you hear EVERYTHING below 500 kHz. Anyway, I'm building a few lowpass filters as soon as I get the rest of the components I need; one for me and one for a list member I've been corresponding with who is going to give me some feedback. I'll be glad to make more if they work out well. The bandpass filter too, but that'll take a little longer. 73 - Ken, VE3HLS From: Robert Costa, KB6QXM kb6...@yahoo.com To: Brian Lloyd brian-wb6...@lloyd.com Cc: Carol F. (If Q is low enough the loop can be tuned with lumped constants.) But if one wants the preselector to be independent of the loop, I would use a link or tapped input to the first LC network, loosely-coupled to a FET gain stage, followed by a second, identical LC network, followed by a FET buffer to match a 50-ohm feedline to the RX. I'm surprised the Flex-5000 is so deaf. My 1500 receives perfectly well down to about 480 something kilohertz, then the bandpass filter clicks out and all heck breaks loose. Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - REAL DX
Hi Jeff, I bought the Flex-1500 to use mainly as a mediumwave DXing receiver. The fact that it transmits is a bonus. Our local ham dealer said he has sold many 1500s to SWLs. As a DXing receiver it's $250 cheaper than the SDR competition and does the job very well. The 3000 and 5000 have even better receiver specs, but then you're paying for a lot more equipment than an SWL needs. I've never heard much in the 137 kHz allocation but have already logged a few stations on 600m, which interests me greatly. I'll be keeping an eye on the band from now on. 73 - Ken From: Jeff Singer jsin...@i1.net To: 'Ken Alexander' k.alexan...@rogers.com; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 11:41:48 AM Subject: RE: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - REAL DX Ken, I was likewise surprised by your statement about successfully using the Flex-1500 to receive 600 meter ham beacons. I just checked on my 1500 and what I notice is that when I change frequency from 481 kHz to 480kHz whatever filter is currently in the front end is removed/bypassed because and the receiver front end is wide open to everything from mediumwave stations to hams participating in the ARRL DX contest this weekend. It becomes a total mess. I designed a lowpass filter that rolls off at 400 kHz. I chose 400 kHz because then there's sufficient attenuation at the lower mediumwave band. If I designed it to roll off at 500 kHz then some strong locals on 530 and 590 would bleed through. One or two people have asked me to share the design I came up with. One other thing that would be nice is to have an option to bypass the built-in front-end filters thus allowing selection of an external filter. It's not an option, but that's what my 1500 does right out of the box. The front end filters (appear to) cut out when I tune down from 481 kHz. All is well on 481. Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - Technical Info
I took my Flex-1500 down and found a few stations in the new band tonight! First was WE2XGR/1 on 506.3 with a CW beacon. He was 579 and would have been an easy QSO. Of course, there's currently no QRM! He's located in FN42hi and I'm in FN04gc. I also heard what sounded like someone calling CQ in JT65x. Can't tell what mode for sure because I don't have WSJT installed on this computer yet. He was on 497.5 kHz and had a strong signal. Luckily the 600m band is above where the front end filter on my 1500 cuts out so I'm able to listen here without any trouble. Antenna is a Wellbrook Loop sitting on the ground and currently leaning against my landlord's garden shed. I'll be setting it up on a TV antenna tripod (on the ground) with a rotor this weekend. 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS On 16/02/2012 1:32 PM, Lloyd Berg N9LB wrote: All, While the 1 watt to 5 watt power seems small, it really isn't because the specification is Effective Radiated Power. If you are running a 60 foot vertical ( requiring a huge matching network ), your efficiency would only be a few percent, therefore your transmitter power output would be somewhere around 100 watts. That is still very low communications power, but quite suitable for CW and some digital modes over 100's of miles - maybe more. I plan to gear up for it and be ready to go on the first day operation becomes legal. Yes I'll be using my FLEX-5000. Transmitting will probably require some form of low frequency transverter. Although I'm a ham I plan to use my 1500 mostly for Mediumwave and Longwave DXing, and for that it seems like it should work nicely. I do have a question though... I have tried recording using the buttons on the front panel and my 1500 recordes OK, I can go to the appropriate folder and see the file with the correct date and time stamp. However, I can't play it back through PowerSDR.. The receiver just keeps on playing. I clicked on the Start button, thinking I had to stop receiving in order to play back a file but that didn't help. There are only 2 buttons on the front panel so this must be really easy, but so far no luck! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Thanks Dudley, I'm not sure what all of that means, but I'll give it a try! 73 - Ken From: FlexRadio Support, Dudley Hurry supp...@flex-radio.com To: Ken Alexander k.alexan...@rogers.com Cc: t...@flexradio.com t...@flexradio.com; flexradio@flex-radio.biz flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 9:54:33 PM Subject: [Flexradio] New Flex-1500 Owner Ken, You can correct.for the offset by changing the IF in the DDS box in Setup menu = General = HW Config tab. Select Expert , then you change from the default of 9khz, to something smaller, but higher than your normal RX passband, try 5000 first. You can go down to 0. But this will effect AM and FM modes. 73, Dudley On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Ken Alexander k.alexan...@rogers.com wrote: Thanks Tim, The manual's not very clear on this. I need to read it a few more times. Hope I can bug you with another question: The problem I'm having is that the red line on the panadapter screen that indicates the tuned frequency is not in the centre of the 36 kHz wide display. It's about 9 kHz down from the upper limit and I can't see how to move it. As a result, the Pan slider lets me move very little in one direction and much more in the other. The Center button does nothing at 0.5x zoom. How does one center the red line into the center of the 36 kHz display? Many thanks!
