Hi Ken,

CWX is extremely unreliable, I have seen all sorts of problems with it,
even a complete cold boot of the PC!
I've had the same problems as you with using the predefined messages,
works great for a while then boom, goes off on one and often find I have
to either restart PSDR or reboot the PC to fix it, this is with a Flex3000.

For CW you will be much better off using an external programmable keyer,
much more reliable.

A few days before Field Day I figured out how to get PSDR 2.6.4 and N1MM
Logger to work together using VSP Manager.  Some of you may recall the
idiotic questions I posted here before I re-read the instructions!

Anyway, I arrived at my Field Day site and set up my antennas, hooked up
and fired up my 1500 and my computer.  Nothing worked. When I checked
VSP Manager I found that the virtual serial connections I'd created days
before were all gone.  I should be able to figure that one out
myself...I guess there's a Save button I neglected to click after
creating the virtual connections.  No big deal; I told N1MM logger not
to look to the radio for anything and then set up my messages in CWX and
 found it easy to use.

With about an hour left in Field Day CWX choked.  Clicking the button
that sent my call produced a 1 second delay followed by a 1 second dash,
a pause and another one second dash.  I can't remember if it stopped
after two dashes or if i stopped it myself.  Seems to me I got the same
result if I tried sending any of the other messages I'd programmed.
It's strange to me why CWX would work reliably all weekend and then
 choke like this.

One more thing, clicking the Keyboard button in CWX has never at any
 time enabled the keyboard.

 Any thoughts or suggestions?

 Many thanks and 73,

Hi Jim,

You might consider the Hardrock 50. It's an amplifier kit with many
modern features. It's designed by a ham who has won the ARRL's homebrew
competition several times.

http://www.hobbypcb.com/amateur-radio/amateur-radio/hardrock-50-hf-power-amp-kit.html

The page I referred you to says they are not yet available, pending FCC

Re: [Flexradio] Why not a best guess on ship dates?

2013-06-19 Thread Ken Alexander
I think you hinted at the answer to your own question; no matter how often Flex
uses the word estimated,  proposed or expected when it comes to shipping
dates, people will consider those dates to be carved in stone and they will
become irate if those dates aren't met.

I understand Flex's need to generate excitement and pre-orders as early as they
can, but considering the amount of dissatisfaction it can generate, if I ran
Flex I'd be tempted not say a word about a new product until it was field
tested and I had enough of them in stock to fulfill orders the day the product
is announced.  Elecraft plays the same game for the same reason and I see the
same frustration developing after early product announcements are made.

All this aside, the frustration of waiting for a new Flex radio really is
trivial compared to being on a waiting list for a new liver.  I hope that
particular wait goes quickly for you!

Subject: [Flexradio] Why not a best guess on ship dates?

I've been looking at all the comments from people, some saying their radios are
going to ship, others just wondering if they ever will.  I fall into the second
category.  I had hoped my 6700 would be here in time for FD, but in looking at
the order numbers received so far, I am at least 150 away, despite having
gotten on the signature list on May 22, 2012.  My number is 3790.

Perhaps Tim or one of the Flex folks could comment on why there cannot be some
sort of listing, perhaps by by invoice number, or perhaps just noting that the
next XXX radios that SHOULD ship by XX date and note that the list is subject
to change.

I am not asking for anything set in concrete just an estimate so I might make
arrangements to be at home when Matt calls.  Or perhaps the notification method
is backwards, send me an email so that I don't have to be sitting on the
keyboard at just the right time  to get notified.  I CAN call you back. Or,
with your email confirmation I can call the credit card company and make the
necessary arrangements on receipt.

I don't want to sound like I am throwing any rocks at Flex, I am a fully
committed user with 1500, 3000, and 5000 radios in my shack. Flex is a unique
company in this day and age and I have been impressed both with the engineering
and the customer service. I can understand the difficulty in ramping up a new
production item, however I think FlexRadio needs to be a bit more sensitive to
those of use who are still waiting and have been for more than a year.  Without
the loyal customer base that they have, sales would not be so great, so please,
guys, take a little time to give many of us a rough idea of when we might
expect to get excited.

Perhaps that is too much to ask with everything else going on in Texas, but it
sure would be nice to have a firmer idea when the tunnel will end.  I know you
are concerned that such a list would cause people to get even more riled up
when you didn't make a proposed date, but I think that just saying what I have
noted above would be somewhat comforting and not likely to generate a storm of
calls and emails over and above what you are already getting.

This wait process is at least as bad as the other one that I am in the middle
of -- a call from the University of Virginia Transplant Center notifying me
that they have a liver for me and get my backside moving North -- NOW!  Still
waiting on that one too…

Thanks for listening Tim, Greg, Gerald, Matt and all the rest.

[Flexradio] Setting up Flex-1500/VSPManager/N1MM

2013-06-16 Thread Ken Alexander

Hi folks,

I'm getting ready to use my Flex -1500 in a contest for the first time,
and that means getting it to work with N1MM Logger.

I have PSDR 2.6.4 running along with VSP Manager and N1MM and am
following the instructions I found at
http://flexradiowiki.abrohamnealsoftware.com/mw/index.php?title=N1MM. I
can't believe I've already hit a brick wall on the very first step
(well, step 1.2). Step 1.2.1 says to select COM18 in the PSDR CAT
Control setup. Can't do it. Next to Port the pull down says None.
Clicking on it gets you more of the same; None.

VSP Manager says there are no Hardware serial ports, which considering
the computer has no serial port connections kinda makes sense. On the
other hand it sounds unusual. The computer does have three USB 3.0 ports.

The instructions aren't asking me to create COM18. It sounds like it's
supposed to be there already, but it isn't. Like I said, dead in the
water on step 1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

http://flexradiowiki.abrohamnealsoftware.com/mw/index.php?title=N1MM.
I can't believe I've already hit a brick wall on the very first step
(well, step 1.2). Step 1.2.1 says to select COM18 in the PSDR CAT
Control setup. Can't do it. Next to Port the pull down says None.
Clicking on it gets you more of the same; None.

VSP Manager says there are no Hardware serial ports, which considering
the computer has no serial port connections kinda makes sense. On the
other hand it sounds unusual. The computer does have three USB 3.0
ports.

The instructions aren't asking me to create COM18. It sounds like
it's supposed to be there already, but it isn't. Like I said, dead in
the water on step 1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flexradio] The Dirty Little Secret of Firmware

2013-05-20 Thread Ken Alexander
My only hope is that Flex continues to produce affordable transceivers and not
just megabuck rigs that are totally beyond my reach. Game-changers are nice

I'm in the market now for a new radio, as my Icom 746 Pro is aging. I'd
really love to purchase a 100 watt version of an SDR, and the

And following this to it's logical conclusion, how long will Flex be able to

Stop advertising that you'll have a new radio every time new software comes

Just heard Alinco is coming out with a 100 watt SDR next year. How long

Re: [Flexradio] Eham review - K1EL VLF Converter and its Use with FlexRadios

2013-03-10 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Terry,

There are sixteen longwave broadcast frequencies between 153 kHz and 279 kHz,
spaced 9 kHz apart (except for 177 and 183, which have remained on some older
layout). Several of the stations are reasonably strong here in Ontario (I'm in
Newmarket) but less so than most shortwave broadcasters.  All stations
broadcast in their local languages, so you'll only find English on 198 kHz
(BBC) and 252 kHz (Ireland).

When conditions are good and quiet (low K-Index) then the band wil open up a
little and you can hear multiple stations on each frequency and weaker stations
from eastern Europe and Russia fading in.

In addition to broadcasters there are Navtex weather broadcasts to shipping on
518 kHz, and DGPS (differential GPS) stations that support shipping navigation.
There are time stations on 60 kHz and 77 kHz and naval communications in
encrypted digital modes down even lower.

I have had good luck with my Flex-1500 and a 500 kHz lowpass filter I built to
keep the mediumwave broadcasters out.  I use a 6 ft diameter active loop
antenna, which provides good reception.

Interesting, comments on the K1EL converter and its use with the Flex radios.

A question for those who have listened on the VLF bands.  Is there much in the
way of activity there, other than beacons?  I know that these frequencies are
used in Europe for commercial broadcasting, but are these signals receivable in
North America other than in coastal areas?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Please folks, the Heros VLF converter is vastly more sophisticated than the
lower priced units with limited filtering from Palomar (which I own) or
Jackson Harbor or the others. The Heros is very fairly priced.

Still, most of us will NOT benefit from the Heros unless we're in an area of
very high RF density. My $89 Palomar works great with my 5000.

Here are details on the impressive Heros VLF converter:
http://herostechnology.co.uk/pdf/VLF_LF_Converter_brochure_web.pdf

Regarding the Heros preselector: that's another waste for almost all U.S.
hams. But maybe a nice addition if you live in rf-noisy downtown London.

Re: [Flexradio] 2nd request-Heros

2013-01-13 Thread Ken Alexander
The front end of the 5K isn't an issue if you are using a receive
converter. The front end of the converter is what you have to be
concerned about, specifically, it would be best if the converter had
it's own low pass filter to prevent overload from local mediumwave stations.

The converter output is in the 3.5 to 4 MHz or the 4 to 4.5 MHz
bands...where the 5K has it's own filters.

I did promise a while back that I'd put a video up for it or at least in
my case the Heros SCR Preselector-CAT. Since I use one with a Flex-5K
I can vouch that if you're using tuned antennas there really shouldn't
be a need for one. If however you are using nonresonant antennas or in
proximity to a transmitting station then you might be surprised at the
improvements that can be had. With the greatest of respect to Tim's
comment I don't consider Taiwan's Premier radio station to be very close
to me in the UK however it is the station which causes me the greatest
problem! Or at least it did until I got the Heros Preselector. And just
to be clear, the incoming, coaxial cable has two line isolators so there
is negligible RF getting back into the shack (Tested with spectrum

It is very useful if you have a lot of near by strong signal
interference causing intermod mixing on the ham bands. It is more
useful on the FLEX-1500 and FLEX-3000 as they do not have individual ham

supplied with the FLEX-1500 has a full metal shield around the RX and
TX wire pairs whereas most USB cables do not. The only thing getting
through the USB connector is the USB signals themselves.

What little USB noise there is, is more likely generated by the USB
chip (clock) inside the 1500 and is not in any of the ham bands,
rather than stuff coming in via the cable, so signal quality is
unlikely to improve with the additional cable treatments like
galvanic isolation.

Re: [Flexradio] Newbie with some Questions

2012-04-04 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Martin,

One of the main differences between a Flex 1500 and the 3000 or 5000 is that
the 1500 communicates with your computer via a USB cable.  The 3000/5000 both
use Firewire, and they can be particular about which Firewire chipset is used.
As far as putting a load on the computer is concerned I don't know if a Flex
1500 + PowerSDR software will put less of a load on the computer than a
3000/5000.  There are people here who will know this and hopefully they will
jump in soon.  I would try it on the computer you have, but be prepared to
upgrade your computer to something more powerful.  Someone already recommended
a quad core machine.  That's what I did; it's sound advice.

You can use PowerSDR in Demo mode by downloading and installing it.  When you
run it without a Flex transceiver connected it will see this and open a window
that lets you run it in Demo mode.  I haven't tried this myself, but the
capability is there.

Using RTTY should be no different than using PSK-31 or other digital modes.
The RTTY software will generate the tones and they'll be sent to the Flex as an
audio input, just the same as PSK.  It's all audio as far as the transceiver is
concerned.

I can't speak to the CW latency issues, except to say that I hear it gets
better with improvements in the software, and that the best way to send CW with
no latency problems is to use an external keyer.

There are several amplifier options that will give you 100W output.
Unfortunately, those website links are on another computer and I'm currently at
work.  I'll see if I can get them to you later.  I hope the rest of this helps!

Subject: [Flexradio] Newbie with some Questions

Good Morning,

I recently had to part with my radio and decided that this was a good time
to bring my station into the 21st century.

I have a couple questions, so please bear with me.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward the Flex 1500. Reasoning: my computers are
old (Dell 530 and a couple of HP (with serial ports)). All the computers are
running XP SP3.  I looked at the 3000; but that would necessitate purchasing
a new computer. etc. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump that far into the pool.

Question 1: I'm primarily a rtty contester/dx person. I've been through the
videos/faqs etc; however, I see no mention of anybody utilizing rtty on sdr.
PSK yes, rtty no.

Along this line, I also do cw. Reading the eham reviews, I noted a latency
in cw operations. Some of the posts (reviews) were older, I was wondering if
the latency problem has been resolved in the newer versions of PowerSDR.
Comments?

Also on the eham reviews, one poster mentioned that there was a demo
version of PowerSDR available for people to become familar with it. I cannot
find it. Is it still available?

Question 2:  I have a Ameritron ALS 600 amp available. I turned my present
radio (IC735 backup) down to 5 watts and ran it into the amp. I got 45 - 50
watts out of the amp which I figgered was about normal. I would be
interested in a 100 watt amp to put behind the 1500. Are such animals
available? A 100 watts will do me just fine.

Basically, that is my first of many questions. I'm hitting the web site for
answers to most of them and the videos are a great help.

Any recommendations, etc are more than welcome to a new kid on the block.

Thanks and 73

Marty

I'm commissioning a friend of mine to right some rotor automation that
would read the Weather Underground data for my weather station and then
once every 20 minutes or so, ensure the beam was headed in the 'right'
direction if the wind was greater than 20kph (15mph) as an example.

Would anyone else be interested in this?  It would run on windows and would
have to take over the rotor RS232 port while it is running.

Its very simple goal would be to keep the antenna pointed correctly if you
were away for an extended period of time.

Right now, we are going to running it on an Idiom press controller.

Or, has someone already done this?

Sorry, a little off topic for the Flex, but to stay on topic, I did get
WSPR just humming along.

[Flexradio] My FlexControl Doesn't

2012-03-02 Thread Ken Alexander
Just picked up my new FlexControl at the local dealer after a wait of several
weeks.

I plugged it in and watched the drivers install and now all it does is sit
there with all three light lit.  Nothing works.

I did install DDutil and some virtual serial port software, which I don't need
at the moment, and rebooted the computer and plugged the FlexControl back in.
Still nothing.

The Auto-Detect box in the FlexControl Settings window is checked.  I don't see
anything in any of the PowerSDR Setup tabs that has to do with the FlexControl.

This is too simple and yet it doesn't work, which means I'm going to look
foolish again when I get it going.  I can live with that if someone can steer
me in the right direction.

[Flexradio] FlexControl - it works now!

2012-03-02 Thread Ken Alexander
Step 1 in the Quick Start Guide says to install PowerSDR.  I assumed that was
for a new install, and that this wasn't necessary if it was already installed.
I see now that existing versions of PowerSDR must be uninstalled and then
reinstalled.

That seems like a kludge way of doing things?  What's the harm in having
FlexControl drivers and capability already there with any installation so all
one has to do is plug the FlexControl in and go?  I mean, if you have to
uninstall and reinstall then why is the FlexControl menu even displayed if the
FlexControl option wasn't selected during installation?  It's deceiving.

How about adding a note to the Quick Start Guide saying that previous PSDR
installations must be uninstalled and re-installed so that FlexControl
capability becomes available?

Anyway, I apologise for my cranky tone, and I do thank everyone for the
assistance.

Flex Knowledge Centre, and my copy of VAC shows one cable that currently
exists. The instructions say that to create a second cable I go to the Drive
Parameters area in the VAC Control Panel, change 1 to 2 in the Cables box,
 click Set and Click Restart.

I change 1 to 2 and click Set and get the following message: Cannot change
device property (0/5 - Access is denied). Then VAC quits and I have to
 restart it.

I don't even understand what that error message means! Can someone explain in
words I can understand what's happening here? I've tried the VAC Help but I
find it so full of jargon I don't understand it makes me dizzy, which,
 admittedly is pretty easy! :-)

No other software is currently running, including PSDR.

 Any help would be appreciated.

The full (purchased) version of VAC tells you to remove all previous versions
of VAC that might be on the computer. Since you had the demo version, you had
a version of VAC on your computer.

I had the same problem. I went to Windows Control Panel and Add and Remove
Programs and removed the trial version of VAC. That apparently didn't do it.
There were some verstages of VAC still in the computer preventing the
 purchased version from installing.

Apparently, you have to use one of the programs that totally uninstalls not
the Window one. The one I have is Revo. It's a free download.

If that doesn't work, I have a VE friend who helped me, but I don't want to
put out his name or call without has premission.

So, if you still have problems, let me know and I will contact him to see if
he would be willing to help you.

 Good luck.

Re: [Flexradio] 472-479 KHz receiving and transmitting ERP and antennamodels

2012-02-23 Thread Ken Alexander
I can only speak from the experiences I have with my 1500 and my previous
general coverage receiver, which was an AOR AR-7030+.  I used the 7030 many
times with beverages from 500 to 1500 ft long and have only used the 1500 with
lowpass filter and a Wellbrook wideband active loop.  In my brief experience
with the Flex 1500 + lowpass filter + loop combination I'd have to say that it
compares very favourably favourably with my 7030 and a beverage as far as being
able to hear things goes.  There's no comparison when it comes to filters and
noise blankers; the Flex wins hands down!

This doesn't seem to apply to other Flex models, so I guess I'm just lucky.  I
think the up converter is probably the superior solution for 3000s and 5000s
but I think a lowpass filter will serve me nicely,

It is good to see many hams working on this project. As I agree that filtering
can eliminate most or all of the images below 1.8 mhz. My only concern is the
sensitivity at those frequencies.

I am wondering if a up converter would be the best solution.

Here is what I've done with excellent results for the 600+ meter band.

I have two Clifton Labs filters, one is the BCB reject filter mentioned below
and a second custom low pass filter I had made by Clifton La bs with a 3 dB
corner at 85 0 KHz.  This second filter allows my Flex 5000A to cover the low
end of the BCB with no images, down to 500 KHz from about 850 KHZ where the
images appear to start up pretty badly.

As noted by Jordan, the BCB band reject filter still allows stuff from above
the BCB to to get in and produce lots of false signals below 500 KHz.  I can
hear 160M amateur signals there with the BCB reject filter in.  When I run both
the 830KHz low pass filter and the BCB reject filter in series, ALL the false
signals and  images go away.  Nothing left but actual signals from 500 KHz down
to about 250 KHz where images from below 500 KHz begin to start up.  I think
another low pass filter at around 275 KHz would allow reception down lower yet.

With all these filters, I think a down converter is probably best in the end.

I have a Jack Smith customized and swept NDB/Navtex BCB reject filter with
the following attenuation specs within the BCB:
770khz -83.127dB
910khz -84.85dB
960khz -83.467dB

I have the sweeps for the curious

When inline, the display above 550khz shows next to nothing, but once you
tune below 500khz there are still 'false' signals everywhere, although not
as strong as without the filter. Like this, I can hear WWVB quite well, but
cannot rely on the signals that appear on the display to be real.

It takes a further tunable preselector to clear most but not all of the rest
of the 'ghosts', and that only works over a 20-30khz bandwidth at a time.

Personally, a good upconverter to one of the ham bands that have BPfiltering
@ 50ohms impedance at the input would be a better solution.

YMMV...73...Jordan VE6ZT

I have a 500 KHz low pass filter on the way from Clifton Labs.  I will
test 600-630 meter receive capability with the FLEX-5000 and FLEX-1500.
I'll give the group a report once I've had a chance to install it and run
 some tests.

 Also,

Ralph, W5JGV - WD2XSH/7, has run the numbers on how much power you will
need in order to generate 1 watt effective radiated power.  ( A 50'
vertical, no top loading, will need 102 watts of transmitter output to
generate 1W effective radiated power ).

Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - REAL DX

2012-02-21 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi All,

I'm not sure what kind of parameters you'd like to be able to adjust Brian.  I
think that if you put a good filter at the antenna jack and get rid of the AM
broadcasters then your Flex can easily do the rest.

I have already built a lowpass filter that cleans the longwave band of any AM
broadcast interference.  A bandpass filter is more difficult to do; it's not as
forgiving of variations in component values so trimmer capacitors would have to
be added to get it set up correctly, which makes it more expensive to build.

It seems to me one only benefits from a bandpass filter if one lives in parts
of the world where Loran-C is still operating, or  where the longwave broadcast
band is still active, i.e., not North America.  Otherwise, the lowpass filter
lets you hear EVERYTHING below 500 kHz.

Anyway, I'm building a few lowpass filters as soon as I get the rest of the
components I need; one for me and one for a list member I've been corresponding
with who is going to give me some feedback.  I'll be glad to make more if they
work out well.  The bandpass filter too, but that'll take a little longer.

I'm surprised the Flex-5000 is so deaf.  My 1500 receives perfectly well down

there's something different in the hardware...well, there's a ton different in

I built a simple lowpass filter that opens the longwave band up right down to

My Flex-5000 is utterly deaf below the U.S. AM broadcast band. Can't even

local airport Non-Directional Beacons.

But I do some longwave listening with my old Kenwood TS-850/HF vertical and
often
hear European AM broadcast stations in the 150-200 kHz range even from my
QTH in
Missouri. Radio France Inter can often be heard from local sunset until
sunrise
in Europe on 162 kKHz. The BBC station on 198 kHz is almost as loud.

It's easy to assume that these signals are spurs from local AM stations but
they make the very long trip using immense power, often above a megawatt.
Even
very low power 600-meter ham beacons around 500 kHz can be heard over most
of
the U.S.

Hi Jeff,

I bought the Flex-1500 to use mainly as a mediumwave DXing receiver.  The fact
that it transmits is a bonus.  Our local ham dealer said he has sold many 1500s
to SWLs.  As a DXing receiver it's $250 cheaper than the SDR competition and
does the job very well.  The 3000 and 5000 have even better receiver specs, but
then you're paying for a lot more equipment than an SWL needs.

I've never heard much in the 137 kHz allocation but have already logged a few
stations on 600m, which interests me greatly.  I'll be keeping an eye on the
band from now on.

Ken, I was likewise surprised by your statement about successfully using the
Flex-1500 to receive 600 meter ham beacons.  I’ve read Flex discussion boards
for several years. To the very limited degree that users comment on the lowfer
receive performance of Flex radios, posts have always suggested the 3000 and
5000 are worthless below the BCB (and perhaps not great even on the AM BCB).  I
wonder what’s so different about the 1500 in that regard.

I agree with KB6QXM that the upcoming allocation should once again “Spark” [his

2012-02-19 Thread Ken Alexander
I just checked on my 1500 and what I notice is that when I change frequency
from 481 kHz to 480kHz whatever filter is currently in the front end is
removed/bypassed because and the receiver front end is wide open to everything
from mediumwave stations to hams participating in the ARRL DX contest this
weekend.  It becomes a total mess.

I designed a lowpass filter that rolls off at 400 kHz.  I chose 400 kHz because
then there's sufficient attenuation at the lower mediumwave band.  If I
designed it to roll off at 500 kHz then some strong locals on 530 and 590 would
bleed through.

One or two people have asked me to share the design I came up with.  I'm happy
to do that and as soon as I put it in readable form I'll let everybody know and
they can roll their own.

boards for several years. To the very limited degree that users comment on
the lowfer receive performance of Flex radios, posts have always suggested
the 3000 and 5000 are worthless below the BCB (and perhaps not great even on
the AM BCB).  I wonder what's so different about the 1500 in that regard.

Flex has similar frequency coverage specs for all radios, but
mentions that additional preselectors or filters are required below
1.8 MHz, even for the 1500. I remember reading that the 5000 has a
superior set of filters, so it may appear deader below 1.8 MHz than
the other radios.

Seems to me this is an opportunity for a third party
kitter/manufacturer to supply an outboard preamp+filter product.

One other thing that would be nice is to have an option to bypass the
built-in front-end filters thus allowing selection of an external
filter.

It's not an option, but that's what my 1500 does right out of the box.  The
front end filters (appear to) cut out when I tune down from 481 kHz.  All is
well on 481.  It's a total mess on 480 kHz and below.

removed/bypassed because and the receiver front end is wide open to everything
from mediumwave stations to hams participating in the ARRL DX contest this
weekend.  It becomes a total mess.

I designed a lowpass filter that rolls off at 400 kHz.  I chose 400 kHz
because then there's sufficient attenuation at the lower mediumwave band.  If
I designed it to roll off at 500 kHz then some strong locals on 530 and 590
would bleed through.

One or two people have asked me to share the design I came up with.  I'm happy
to do that and as soon as I put it in readable form I'll let everybody know
and they can roll their own.

You might also want to consider a sharp, two stage, tunable, LC bandpass
filter. We are only talking about a band that is 7kHz wide. I would think that
a lowpass filter would be difficult to make and a simple tunable bandpass
preselector would work better.

Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - Technical Info

2012-02-17 Thread Ken Alexander
I took my Flex-1500 down and found a few stations in the new band
tonight! First was WE2XGR/1 on 506.3 with a CW beacon. He was 579 and
would have been an easy QSO. Of course, there's currently no QRM! He's
located in FN42hi and I'm in FN04gc.

I also heard what sounded like someone calling CQ in JT65x. Can't tell
what mode for sure because I don't have WSJT installed on this computer
yet. He was on 497.5 kHz and had a strong signal.

Luckily the 600m band is above where the front end filter on my 1500
cuts out so I'm able to listen here without any trouble. Antenna is a
Wellbrook Loop sitting on the ground and currently leaning against my
landlord's garden shed. I'll be setting it up on a TV antenna tripod
(on the ground) with a rotor this weekend.

While the 1 watt to 5 watt power seems small, it really isn't because
the specification is Effective Radiated Power. An efficient dipole

vertical would be over 500 feet tall.

If you are running a 60 foot vertical ( requiring a huge matching
network ), your efficiency would only be a few percent, therefore your
transmitter power output would be somewhere around 100 watts.

That is still very low communications power, but quite suitable for CW
and some digital modes over 100's of miles - maybe more.

I plan to gear up for it and be ready to go on the first day operation
becomes legal. Yes I'll be using my FLEX-5000. Transmitting will
probably require some form of low frequency transverter. Receiving
might just require filtering and possibly a pre-amp.

I'm looking forward to exploring a whole new band!

1 watt maximum EIRP. Big deal.

Not too exciting news. I am glad to hear that we have some Medium
Frequency spectrum, but 1 watt output and the size of the antenna is
almost not worth the effort. The requirements remind me of the lowfer
band (160-190 khz) limitations.

This is almost part 15 output.
How about giving back the lower portion of the 220 band.

Ken,

You can correct.for the offset by changing the IF in the DDS box in Setup menu
= General =  HW Config tab.  Select Expert , then you change from the
default of 9khz, to something smaller,  but higher than your normal RX
passband, try 5000 first.  You can go down to 0. But this will effect AM and
FM modes.
