Re: [GNC] Can't import .qif files from quicken since latest update

QIF importer in Gnucash 5.6 gives me the same error for my credit card
import even though the same file works in Quicken and in Gnucash 5.5. I
reinstalled Gnucash 5.5.

If I understand your comment corrrectly, the format of the qif file, with
and with the first lines of the sample qif file below, both import into
Gnucash 5.5. The only difference is you don't have to tell Gnucash which
account to use, it is automatically specified in the first four lines.

Re: [GNC] IRA conversion

2024-04-06 Thread Fred Tydeman
I assume that that Distributions account should be of type Income (not
Asset).

It appears that Income accounts cannot have a stock account type (so cannot
move stock via this method).
Would have to fake it by selling the stock (in 'from' account) to get cash,
move the cash, then buy the stock
(in the 'to' account).

Also, since X dollars come into Distributions and X dollars leave, the net
is zero. So, any report would
show zero income.

I think a better solution is to use four splits:
Cash or stock coming out of Regular IRA Asset account
Cash or stock going into Roth IRA Asset account
Cash going into a Distributions Income account
Cash going into a dummy Expense account

Then, make sure to exclude the dummy Expense account in any reports.

That would save some time setting up the several reports.

Re: [GNC] Can't import .qif files from quicken since latest update

I suspect this bug fix in the 5.6 release notes is the cause:

Bug 799225 - QIF Importer Crashes Silently after "Start Import" Button:
Don't allow a QIF investment transaction without an action (buy/sell/etc)

I *think* it was intended to block *investment* transactions but it

Re: [GNC] Forgotten Splits

2024-04-06 Thread David Carlson
I think that the point Liz tried to make was a memorized transaction can be
designed to be a prototype that can be customized each time by edits that
are easy to make,
possibly more by deletions of unused splits than by adding splits.
Further, the memorized transactions can also be edited when they have
attributes that you don't expect to need again.

I also use the auto-competion feature frequently to fill in lines similar
to lines in previous transactions.

I don't have a problem with GnuCash failing to remember changes when I save
the file right away, or for certain user associated changes I need to close
the program to make those changes stick.

I periodically assess, as you are doing now, whether there is a better

Years ago (before electronic payments and deposits) I recall that it was
possible to program GnuCash to print the MITRE line, as it used to be called,
but you needed to use special magnetic ink so that check readers could read
them reliably. I imagine that it is still possible, but hardly necessary in
the United States, anyway. I think that you used to get the supplies from a
company called Checksoft. Back then banks weren't very cooperative because
mistakes could wreak havoc in the clearing houses, and today they would be even
less cooperative due to increased fraud concerns.
If you are really an alum of Southwest Bell, you are probably a U. S.

suspect that your interest may be mostly academic to show your grandchildren.

Something I've noticed in the import and reconciliation is that I spend

[GNC] Can't import .qif files from quicken since latest update

2024-04-06 Thread Bryan B.
I've tried several different methods to export a .qif file from quicken and
import it into GnuCash.

The process of importing the file goes fine until I reach the part where
the actual import occurs. Then I get this type of message:

"Missing QIF investment action for transaction dated 08/31/2023."

Upon investigation, it would seem that these transactions are from
automated transfers from my bank account to an IRA fund. I believe these
are money transfers, where the money is simply transferred without
explicitly purchasing a security, and then the security is purchased later.

When I opened and examined the .qif file, and did some conversation with
ChatGPT-4, it would seem that I would have to put a line such as
"N***XIn***" for each of the offending transactions. I did try that, and
GnuCash still didn't accept those transactions (that I could see).

Is anyone familiar with this problem already, or have any ideas on how to
solve it?

Re: [GNC] GNC Past email archives

I believe there is something on the mailing list site (the one
referenced at the bottom of every message) that gives you a link for a
"helper" Google search that is tailored to search the archives. I find
it helpful to find "that answer I remember seeing that I can't for the
life of me remember when" inquiries.

I, too, used to Nabble, but it's a dead one, now. A pity.

[GNC] Multi-column reports- sort by acct code?

2024-04-06 Thread Chris Skudder

I usually do multi-column Statements of Activity and Position.
I have been using Custom Multicolumn because that sorts in order of
Account Code.

Is there a way to sort the Income Statement-Multicolumn by acct code?
That would save some time setting up the several reports.

Thanks very much,

Re: [GNC] Finance Quotes Yahoo off the rails again?

2024-04-06 Thread David G. Pickett via gnucash-user
That's a lot of crontab weirdness for a cosmetic bug of bad code or bad
install, on top of the flatpak weirdness.  Maybe either there should be some
command line option to direct Finance::Quotes to the right or unusual
mechanisms, or Finance::Quotes should just check and move on silently, saving
the status for part of a message if all run configurations are discovered not
viable at the end?

The snap installed apps seem more normal, but then I do not run them from cron
or the command line.  It'd be nicest if the latest GnuCash updates could be
distributed through normal Ubuntu/Linux Software channels.  I guess they are
not "Long Term Stable"?  Life on the bleeding edge!  At least once a week, I am
running "flatpak update -y", "snap refresh", "Software Updater" (obsolescent
but seems to install stuff that "Software" "Updates" tab wants to install with
a reboot), and finally "Software" "Updates" tab.

The time of the quote fetch might be a busy time, but I want it after I go to
bed and before I start clamscan, which is very cpu and file intense.  Of
course, it has to be after the markets close at 4 Eastern, but the Mutual Fund
admins sometimes take a while to post their NAVs.  I have to wait a day to get
Fidelity captive security quotes from their website for some of my 401Ks.  I am
not sure my quote updates get the NAV or the last or what, but it is just an
approximation for Net Worth reports of unrealized gain.

Possibly. I noticed this in the GnuCash technical reference
(https://gnucash.org/docs/v5/C/gnucash-manual.pdf):

=
On Linux if there is no graphic session that has already started the
dbus, running on your
computer at the time of the quote request, you must do the entry as
follows instead:

0 16 * * 5 env `dbus-launch` sh -c 'trap "kill $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID" EXIT;
gnucash-cli --quotes get ${HOME}/gnucash-filename > /dev/null 2>&1=

For *its and giggles, change the time of your cron job to an hour or so
before or after 23:45.

Still, I have not been able to duplicate the issue on an Ubuntu 22.04
virtual machine (VirtualBox) and the current stable Flatpak GnuCash 5.6
(Build ID: Flathub 5.6-1). I'm running the update every hour.

There will always be non-digital methods of payment. I use preprinted checks
with GnuCash and my only issue is
that I haven't figured out how to associate an address with a payee - I'm sure
it's there, but

I will hate it if we can no longer use checks because transacting in cash is

Subject: [GNC] Security not showing up in Price Database

Hi. I am a reasonably new (last 6 months) user of gnucash. I am using
version 5.3 on Windows 10. I am not getting online quotes but I own
various *private *securities, for which I manually enter prices, either in
the register as I make capital calls or receive distributions, or in the
Price Database itself, when the Fund manager tells me the valuation has
changed. I own two funds from the same manager and I created Securities
for them on the same dates when I first set up gnucash. I created both
(let's call them XYZ Fund 1 and XYZ Fund 2) in the same Namespace that I
called Private Funds. I named the two securities XYZ Fund 1 and XYZ Fund
2. I created (fake) symbols and display symbols for them, which, again,
are XYZ Fund 1 and XYZ Fund 2. I have been entering transaction for each
for the last few months and both appear priced/valued correctly (with the
correct # of shares and the correct valuation) in the Accounts tab.

The issue is that while both securities appear in the Tools/Securities
Editor, only XYZ Fund 1 appears in the Tools/Price Database. I've looked
carefully and didn't mis-name one into the wrong Namespace or anything else
I can see. Any ideas why this might happen and how to fix?

Much appreciated...

It will be just academic.
NZ (New Zealand, Aotearoa) ceased using them in 2021.
Australia promises to be cheque free by 2030.
My bank in Au will stop accepting cheques from this May.

Re: [GNC] check printing

2024-04-06 Thread Andrea
Thanks for responding. I print checks from more than I bank. I have
MICR ink and a software that prints checks. That’s why I would like to
find a software or software integration that will print routing and
account numbers on checks. My banks are ok with it and I’ve never had a
problem. Many workers want to a check after they have finished their
   work.

Moreover, I suspect that the banks don't like people being able to

Actually, it’s not academic. There are still many workers in the US
that want a check payment once the work is done. Right now I have a
printer with MICR ink that does print routing and account numbers. I
print from different bank accounts, so it is so easy to print checks on
blank stock and have the different bank information printed in MICR. I
would like to find a software that can do that or integrate with a
   check printing software.

Re: [GNC] IRA conversion

2024-04-06 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
I am not really knowledgeable in this area (or many other areas, to be honest),
but I found the following discussion (in a Quicken forum) that might lead you
towards an answer:
https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7931315/tax-summary-report-does-not-include-income-for-conversions-to-roth-ira

My reading of that post suggests that you might first sell your regular IRA
into a (taxable)  Distributions account. That would allow creation of any gains
entries necessary. Then use the Distributions account to buy into the Roth.

I'm sure others will inform me and you of the errors in my advice.

Re: [GNC] QIF import "Unspecified" transaction

2024-04-06 Thread Joseph Keithley
Your response was a little too deep for my question. I simply want to type
in "Expense:Entertainment:Restaurant:Tip" instead of scrolling to the
Expense item then clicking on a triangle then scrolling to the
Enterntainment item then clicking on that triangle then scrolling to the
Restaurant item then clicking on that triangle then scrolling to the Tip
item and then highlighting it and then closing the window. Which is
exactly what Quicken does and it is much faster than surfing all my
accounts, items and categories with a mouse. If the account doesn't exist
I want to be asked, just like Gnucash and Quicken both do now, to add an
account/item. This feature already exists in Gnucash in individual account
register when entering a transaction. Why can't this feature also exist in
the QIF importer?
