Re: Pro vs Max

2023-09-24 Thread Mary Otten
Interesting. I also have a 10 r with which I am quite happy. But I was thinking
about getting a 15 pro because it’s a lot newer and I thought it might have
better performance better battery life and the better camera. But, Kelly, based
on your comments, I’m thinking about not bothering.

2023-09-24 Thread Kelly Ford
I appreciate all the replies here.

I did go with the iPhone 15 Pro and have been using it since Friday. I chose
the Pro in large part because I prefer the smaller size. That said, so far I’m
really not noticing meaningful differences in most tasks between my iPhone 10R
and this 15 Pro. Apps might launch a bit faster but VoiceOver performance when
moving between items is about the same and add-heavy web sites with videos that
play muted by default still seem to bring VoiceOver to very problematic web
performance.

I’m not saying any of this to be critical and it is too early to know about
battery performance.

I strongly second your comments, Christopher.

While I think it best to start with a clean install, I have not done so in
many, many years. Apple makes it so convenient to simply move data from one
device to another.

This is just my opinion, but I think it's always best to start from scratch.
This way you don't propagate those mistakes you made on your previous device.
That being said, I always bring everything forward in iCloud. I'm just too lazy
to go through all of those settings I've tweaked. Note on Windows, I do always
start from scratch.

Hi,
Does anyone have thoughts on what is best when upgrading, whether one should
start fresh with the phone or whether one should always get what was saved from
iCloud. I'll be upgrading from the 12 basic to the
15 pro, and I noticed that when I upgraded from the XR to the 12, I simply got
what was saved on iCloud. It was the same settings and same layout as before,
and somewhere along that time I got apps that weren't being used anymore or
that I had downloaded and didn't need. I guess the question is whether I should
start from scratch on this new phone and download the apps I want or whether I
should get what I want from icloud and keep everything I've had for years in
the way of older apps and layout and such.

RE: USB-C Headphones

2023-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would always go with the Apple Earpods which now are available with a USB-C
connector. They may cost $19.99 or $24.99, but in my opinion that is still
relatively inexpensive and I think for that price the sound quality is
fantastic and while this may not be the case for everybody, they fit my ears
perfectly. I can stick in just the right side a little bit so I can hear
outside sounds perfectly and for me that works great.

Subject: USB-C Headphones

Hello,

With the iPhone 15 requiring USB-C headphones if you want to use something that
is wired and not an adapter, I’m curious what others have found as far as good
headphones in the space? I like to have at least one low-cost set of headphones
for my devices because the wires often wear out by putting the headphones in
and out of my pocket and such.

I did purchase the headphones at the following link from Amazon for just under
$10 and so far they have been working well.

USB C Headphones,USB Type C...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZV1KQ3F?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I have higher quality, wireless headphones for music and media listening, but
these work well for just basic text access. One nice thing that wasn’t obvious
to me from the description is these are magnetic at the end where the earbuds
are, which helps reduce clutter and tangling.

As I said, I’m curious what others are finding in the space.

Kelly.

Could you check your emails that you are sending out to the viphone group. I

Subject: Question about when I upgrade

Hi,
Does anyone have thoughts on what is best when upgrading, whether one should
start fresh with the phone or whether one should always get what was saved from
Tom

The person whose message preceded mine suggested Terri get an SE second

The reason I stick with the smaller model is that it fits where I need it to

Re: Dynamic island

2023-09-24 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

It mostly says Empty on my iPhone 14 Pro too, but some apps put information
there, and I’ve heard the feature demonstrated on AppleVis. Presumably it will
have things in it more often as more developers start using it.

Best,
Anna

Dynamic island

2023-09-24 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi,

Does voiceover actually work with dynamic island? I keep hearing it appearing,
but voiceover just says empty. This is with iOS 17 on an iPhone 15 and the
first time I have had access to this feature.

I was doing the same thing until I decided to upgrade to the 15 Pro. I so wish
that they would make a smart battery case for these phones.

Apple also offers you a 14 day return with no restocking fees. So if
you are not happy you can return the phone, and get something else. I
guess it really always depends on the location, how the associates may
be but I have been on both sides being the employee and the customer.
There is no commission so it really makes no sense to pressure you
into a purchase. Just go in if you can, and play with the devices.
That's truly the only way to know what will work for you.

Hello Ann,

As it has been a while since last I forgot a password, I can not be certain but
such a wait time certainly sounds reasonable as it may decrease the likelihood
that a BOT or a hacker would be successful in compromising your account.

Check the web and you will probably find a definite answer to your question.

I forgot my password for my Gmail email account.

I use this email on Mac, iPhone, iPad and windows desktop.

Went to Google and went to forgot my password.

I used iPhone for Google verification code.

I entered this number on desktop.

Received an email message stating

In 6 hours, we’ll email your email address with a link to sign in to your
account.

Is this a new Google policy?

RE: Just a few upgrade questions, and other comments

2023-09-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Terri,

I think you will really enjoy either a 14 or 15 model. Off the top of my head,
I would say go with the new 15 series.

I am more concerned that you have a positive experience while visiting the
Apple store than what you may or may not purchase.

So, my suggestions are:

1.
Make certain that you give yourself plenty of time to explore all of the
devices about which you are interested. Generally speaking, unless you know
exactly what you want, I would plan on spending about 2-hours at the Apple
Store. Remember, I am basing this on Los Angeles area locations.

2.
Make certain that you are comfortable with the Apple associate who helps you.
For example, some associates speak very fast or may seem to be impatient. If
you find that you are not comfortable with the associate, be kind and gracious
and, blaming no one, ask if there is another associate available. On more
than one occasion, I have had to ask for a different associate because I could
not understand the associate because of extremely rapid speech or, more often
than not, they continued to address my sighted companion, instead of me.
Granted, such things do not happen, often but they do happen and you must be
prepared to deal with them. Remember, it is your time and your money and you
must stay in control of the situation.

3.
If you have them, be certain to take a pair of wired Ear pods with you. More
often than not, the store will be very noisy and you will definitely want to
use a headset when testing.

4.
Do not feel compelled to purchase a new phone just because you are in the
store. Fewer retail experiences are worse than buyer's remorse.

Okay, good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Subject: Just a few upgrade questions, and other comments

Hello everyone,

First of all, I have really appreciated reading the thoughts, and opinions on
the new phones. As well as peoples experiences with them, in the stores. I
always find this sort of stuff helpful.

I am considering upgrading my phone. At first, I wasn't going to do it.
I love my 12 mini. It's smaller, and pretty easy for me to hold. It still works
quite well, and I really don't have any issues with it.

However, I get my phone service with T-Mobile. If I were to upgrade now,
it would be better for me, then if I were to wait another year or so.
Right now, I can trade in this phone, and it will help go toward the
cost of my next phone. I really don't want to have to trade in this
phone. But this is the way I have to go about these sorts of things, if
I ever want to upgrade.

My battery in my phone is degrading. I actually have a service message
on it, that states that I need to replace the battery. So I could do
that, and use this phone for longer. But a part of me thinks that it is
just better to go ahead and do the upgrade instead.

I would be interested to hear what people think about this. I know some
of this will be opinion. That is fine by me.

However, some of you on this list know way much more about these sorts
of things than I do. That is something I have really come to appreciate
over the years. It is a big part as to why I remain a part of this list.

I plan to go to my local store within the next week, or so. I want to
hold the 15 plus, and the 15 pro. I want to explore them, and see which
one I might be most comfortable with.

I was also considering checking out the 14 pro. Just so that I would
know all of my options. I am not interested in the pro, max phones. That
would just be too large of a device for me.

I really like the idea of having a phone that uses USB C charging.

However, what sorts of charging blocks might I need?

I am not sure if I have what I need, to support that type of charging. I
know I at least have one. I usually try to buy dual charging blocks,
because I have so many devices, that this just works better for me. Or,
I have friends that come over, who need to charge their stuff.

I am really looking forward to possibly getting a pro, just for the
camera. I never in my life thought that i would want a phone, for it's
camera.

However, the new feature with Be My Eyes, has been a game changer for
me. I use it quite regularly. At least, once a day. Usually a lot more
than that though. I am still not always the best at taking a picture. I
hope that this might improve in time. I just don't always understand
how, or where to aim the camera.

Are the cameras really all that different from the 12 Mini I have now,
to the 14 pro, or the 15 pro?

I really want to make the best choice possible for myself. But of
course, I won't know really what to expect, until I go to the store.

What do you all think?

Any thoughts, or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

I strongly second your comments, Christopher.

While I think it best to start with a clean install, I have not done so in
many, many years. Apple makes it so convenient to simply move data from one

Subject: Question about when I upgrade

Hi,
Does anyone have thoughts on what is best when upgrading, whether one should
start fresh with the phone or whether one should always get what was saved from

A Message from Moderator Mark to the Group Regarding Mailing List Distribution Outages

2023-09-24 Thread VIPhone

Hello Everyone,

For the past few days, I have noticed that after 6PM (California local
time) to approximately 6AM, posts to the list, while being visible via the
Google Group web portal, are not being distributed to email clients.

I don’t know why this is happening nor do I know when it will end but if
you are posting to the list during the time window, listed above, members
who rely on email clients to read group messages, will not receive your
posts.

So if you sent a message to the list, last night (California local time),
for example and did not receive a reply, it is because only people who use
the web portal would have seen your message.

Just so you know, I do not use the web portal to read messages posted to
the group.

If you use a web browser to access group messages, you will not have
noticed any change in the list behavior.

However, if you are like me, and rely on a third-party email client, for
the foreseeable near future, remember to only post to the group during the
6AM (California local time) to 6PM window.

Hopefully, whatever problem Google is having with its group servers will be
resolved, soon.

Moderator Mark

I agree with Richard, I won't be upgrading my iPhone any time soon
either. I've got the 13 pro max the one terabyte model and it is
working great. I updated to 17.01 today with no issues. I didn't
have any problems changing the variations of the eloquence voices, or
the Tom, or Alex voice that I tested. Man, if you want, you can
really increase the Tambor of the Tom voice and make him sound very
weird. I've just got to download the 2 new British Siri voices and
I'll be set.

I am sure those numbers are with basic use!
I am lucky to get ten hours with my 14 pro max when using oko aira zoom texting

Maybe they should have us test the battery with that use and then they can put

about running out of power in a day, even when using GPS navigation for

I would think that the battery on the Plus models would be as good as the

I had to update in February as my 11 pro couldnt hold out nine months!
I opted for the 14 pro max though a larger screen then the pro.
I am so glad i did as i get 14-16 hours on one charge!
This is texting mail constantly whatsapping facebook phone calling and
using my hotspot with the braillesense!
 Hope this helps!

Hm I don't even get 2 days with my max. When I got it I got about 16
to 18 hours, but now I still can get through 12 or 14 depending on
what I am doing. Once you really start to break these phones in the
battery doesn't last as long because your doing everything on it. I
read I watch youtube, and do a bit of social media. Along with my
banking and gps. So I am never complaining about more battery life.

Hi Kelly,
Like Robert stated, the larger models get much, much better battery life.
Before purchasing my beloved 14 Pro Max, I always carried a charging cable with
me, when out for a day. With the Pro Max, I never, ever worry about running
out of power in a day, even when using GPS navigation for hours at a time. The
phone is amazing.
I would think that the battery on the Plus models would be as good as the Pro
Max but cannot personally confirm this as I do not own a Plus model.

RE: Just a few upgrade questions, and other comments

2023-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
First, Kathy, if you are asking how long the 12 mini will be supported, no one
knows exactly other than maybe Apple; however, considering the XR is a couple
years older than the 12 mini and it is able to run iOS 17, I would guess the 12
mini will be supported for at least 2 more years, if not more.

Terri asked a lot of questions.
First, as far as I can tell, for object identification and OCR the new 48 pixel
camera in the 15 pro won't make those functions any better. The higher the
pixels perhaps the better the picture for someone sighted but for the kind of
stuff most blind people need, you do not need that level of camera.

I would check with Apple about the USBC cable that will come with the 15 models
to find out if the end that goes into the charging block is also USBC, which I
suspect it is. That would mean you need a charging block with the USBC port
not the standard USB A port.

Note, the chip in the 15 and 15 plus is the same chip as in the 14 pro, so if
that is at all important to you, it will be less expensive to go with the 14
pro if you decide to upgrade this year.

I personally have the 13 pro and see nothing to make me want to upgrade to the
15 pro. I'll probably stick with this phone for several years and will replace
the battery when the time comes.

That is what I can remember to address in your questions.
Most decisions to upgrade are based on exactly what features you want.

HTH,

Richard, USA.

2023-09-24 Thread Mary Otten
So what chip is in the second generation SE? Compared to the 12 mini? If
they’re very close to the same, I don’t think it would be worth it to purchase
an SE. That phone might go out of Support at about the same time as your 12
mini. I have a 10 r, and I’m expecting that next year it won’t get an upgrade
to the newest OS. If you purchased a 15, you would have it for five years of
use, based on Apple‘s track record of how long iPhones get updated. I’m quite
sure that the second generation se is not going to get five more years of
updates. So, I guess it’s up to you depending on the difference in the cost.
But if it was me, I would get a 15 if I couldn’t swing a 15 pro.

I agree with not getting an SE. If you get a later model it will be supported
longer by apple. You'r einvesting in a phone that should last you seveal years.

2023-09-24 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Terri,

I hesitate to offer advice on these sort of questions since they are
subjectively and economically dependent.

I understand your battery issue and don't disagree that something needs to be
done. But I'm a huge fan of my iPhone 13 Mini and the plain fact is that
getting a Mini in the future will be all but impossible unless you want a used
device. I would encourage you to get a feel for the size of the phones you're
considering since I expect they will feel substantially different from your 12
Mini. And you should know that a 15 Plus is the same physical size as the 15
Pro Max.

I'm going to disagree with Fred that you should consider one of the SE models
whether the second or third generation. I don't think someone who has gotten
used to a device without a home button should return to one with one.

I hope you find something you like and get it at a very good price.

Re: Just a few upgrade questions, and other comments

2023-09-24 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Terry,

I wouldn’t recommend getting an SE because I’m pretty sure it uses an older
chip than either the iPhone 14 Pro or any of the iPhone 15s. The newer the chip
you buy, the longer your phone is likely to get updates. Also, I don’t think
the SE has the ability for precision finding using AirTags and such. USBC
charging could be nice, as lots of devices use it. Also, if you have AirPods or
an Apple Watch, you can apparently charge them from your phone, which could be
nice in a pinch. I would recommend the iPhone 14 Pro over the 15, since they
use the same chip, the Pro models have LIDAR, and the camera on both is really
good. The 15 Pro has a newer chip, though, and USBC charging, so it is
definitely worth considering.

Good luck,
Anna

Re: Pro vs Max

2023-09-24 Thread lenron brown
Hm I don't even get 2 days with my max. When I got it I got about 16
to 18 hours, but now I still can get through 12 or 14 depending on
what I am doing. Once you really start to break these phones in the
battery doesn't last as long because your doing everything on it. I
read I watch youtube, and do a bit of social media. Along with my
banking and gps. So I am never complaining about more battery life.

Terri, Since I don't feel it necessary to have the latest and greatest,
please try and understand my bias. My personal choice would be for you to
invest in the second generation IPhone S.E. The cost is substantially less
than any of the more modern phones and you would not be sacrificing very
much in terms of optical recognition. Also, you would be able to continue to
use your various charging devices and chords because the S.E. has the
lightning port.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I have really appreciated reading the thoughts, and opinions
on the new phones. As well as peoples experiences with them, in the
stores. I always find this sort of stuff helpful.

I am considering upgrading my phone. At first, I wasn't going to do it. I
love my 12 mini. It's smaller, and pretty easy for me to hold. It still
works quite well, and I really don't have any issues with it.

However, I get my phone service with T-Mobile. If I were to upgrade now,
it would be better for me, then if I were to wait another year or so.
Right now, I can trade in this phone, and it will help go toward the cost
of my next phone. I really don't want to have to trade in this phone. But
this is the way I have to go about these sorts of things, if I ever want
to upgrade.

My battery in my phone is degrading. I actually have a service message on
it, that states that I need to replace the battery. So I could do that,
and use this phone for longer. But a part of me thinks that it is just
better to go ahead and do the upgrade instead.

I would be interested to hear what people think about this. I know some of
this will be opinion. That is fine by me.

However, some of you on this list know way much more about these sorts of
things than I do. That is something I have really come to appreciate over
the years. It is a big part as to why I remain a part of this list.

I plan to go to my local store within the next week, or so. I want to hold
the 15 plus, and the 15 pro. I want to explore them, and see which one I
might be most comfortable with.

I was also considering checking out the 14 pro. Just so that I would know
all of my options. I am not interested in the pro, max phones. That would
just be too large of a device for me.

Or, I
have friends that come over, who need to charge their stuff.

I am really looking forward to possibly getting a pro, just for the
camera. I never in my life thought that i would want a phone, for it's
camera.

However, the new feature with Be My Eyes, has been a game changer for me.
I use it quite regularly. At least, once a day. Usually a lot more than
that though. I am still not always the best at taking a picture. I hope
that this might improve in time. I just don't always understand how, or
where to aim the camera.

Are the cameras really all that different from the 12 Mini I have now, to
the 14 pro, or the 15 pro?

I really want to make the best choice possible for myself. But of course,
I won't know really what to expect, until I go to the store.

What do you all think?

Any thoughts, or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Question about when I upgrade

2023-09-24 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
My suggestion is to get rid of the apps you no longer want or need, download
the apps you want, do a backup of your old phone and then upgrade using what's
backed up. Ideally doing an encrypted backup using Itunes lets you move more
things like passwords, etc, to your new device.

This is just my opinion, but I think it's always best to start from scratch
This way you don't propagate those mistakes you made on your previous device.
That being said, I always bring everything forward in iCloud. I'm just too lazy

Hi,
Does anyone have thoughts on what is best when upgrading, whether one should
start fresh with the phone or whether one should always get what was saved from

RE: Mark's First VoiceOver Experience with iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max Running iOS 17.

2023-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am surprised your husband didn't give the Apple Store rep a piece of his
mind, if he or she would have been disrespectful to my wife I would have
immediately asked to speak to a manager and explained to them that this was
certainly not the right way to treat a customer and then I would have asked if
somebody without the attitude could help us.

As for the issues with battery life on your SE 2022, a complete reset and
starting from scratch is definitely the recommended course of action. It's a
pain in the neck (or lower), but while it is inconvenient and takes time,
setting up a phone from scratch every few years and slowly adding back apps,
customizing settings and all that can be a very good thing.

And finally here an article about that iPhone 15 Pro drop test which I read
everybody says has to be taken with a grain of salt as it seem to be the first
one of this kind so I think we'll have to see if other tests confirm what this
guy discovered. I think, by the way, it's ridiculous what people do to get
clicks and likes, apparently he flew all the way to Australia because of the
time difference so he can get his hands on an iPhone 15 Pro a few hours earlier
and do this. Until people stop wasting these types of resources humanity will
never get ahead in their fight against reducing emuissions and a more
sustainable approach to living on this planet; just my two cents worth
regarding this:

In what is most likely the first drop test of the new titanium iPhone 15 Pro, a
reviewer flew to Sydney, Australia, and pitted the handset in a series of drops
against the stainless steel iPhone 14 Pro.
It wasn’t pretty. In fact, after doing OK in a few little drops, how the iPhone
15 Pro fared in bigger drops was shocking — even disturbing. The older
iPhone won, to say the least. Early drop tests damage titanium iPhone 15 Pro
far more than its stainless steel predecessor
In the YouTube video by AppleTrack’s Sam Kohl, the 6-foot-tall reviewer starts
off with some waist-high drops of iPhone 15 Pro
and 14 Pro on concrete in front of the Sydney Opera House. Watch it below.
“I flew all the way to Australia to get the iPhone 15 early and drop test it vs
the iPhone 14 Pro!” He wrote on the video page. “And as it turns out …
the titanium iPhone 15 Pro isn’t as strong as I thought it would be.”
That’s an understatement. In the video, he becomes increasingly flabbergasted
at how badly the titanium phone handles the bigger drops.
Low drops did little harm
group start It only took roughly 6-foot drops and a bit higher to badly crack
iPhone 15 Pro’s front and back. Photo: AppleTrack
It only took roughly 6-foot drops and a bit higher to badly crack iPhone 15
Pro's front and back.
Both the iPhone 15 Pro and 14 Pro do fine in the first few drops on their
edges, glass backs and screens, with barely a nick here and there.
But as the drops get higher, up around face-high, the new handset starts to get
into trouble. Spiderweb cracking shows up first on the glass back. The
iPhone 14 Pro just shows wear on the edges.
iPhone 14 Pro soon shows its mettle
After quite a few drops, the iPhone 14 Pro still only suffered some nicks on
the edges.
Before it’s over, the entertaining video shows the iPhone 15 Pro developing
cracks all over the front and back while the older handset looks almost perfect.
The reviewer seeks out higher and higher drops, eventually going to a roughly
40-foot drop from a walkway down to a plaza’s pavement. That’s a big drop
for any phone, and it finally caused cracking on the iPhone 14 Pro’s front and
back.
But the already-trashed iPhone 14 Pro saw its camera assembly pop out on the
40-footer. And its screen already had stopped functioning in the previous
drops. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro still worked fine even after the huge drop.
Rounded edges may be a problem
Photo image of AppleTrack
iPhone 15 Pro DROP TEST! Is Titanium STRONGER?
Kohl speculates in the video that iPhone 15 Pro’s rounded titanium edges may
actually enable impact to spread cracks to the front and back glass more easily
than iPhone 14 Pro’s straight stainless-steel banded edges.
For that or other reasons, the iPhone 14 Pro absorbed or perhaps deflected
impact much better than the new handset.
It will be interesting to see what more carefully executed drop testing might
reveal about iPhone 15 series handsets’ durability.
In the meantime, let’s just say if you buy a new iPhone 15, now’s not the time
to experiment with going without a case.

RE: not grasping autoCorrect

2023-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
I double checked my settings under General/Keyboard.
I have both autocorrect and predictive text off, but I have Check Spelling on.
That way it alerts you to misspelled words and you can use the rotor to find
them and manually correct it.
For what it is worth, I also turn off smart punctuation. The reason for that
is if you are searching for a book title in BARD or Bookshare and it has an
apostrophe, and you have smart punctuation on, it shows up as a single right
quote, and you likely will not find the title you are searching for.

Re: Pro vs Max

2023-09-24 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

I got an iPhone 14 Pro this past summer. I don’t use the battery as heavily as
some of you, but I routinely get two days on one charge, so I think the odds
are good it would last through a whole day if I did use the GPS extensively for
a day. I’m not doubting that the battery life on the Max is better, just saying
it’s surprisingly good on the regular Pro as well.

Best,

Reordering the list of focuses?

2023-09-24 Thread Gerardo Corripio
I've got several focuses on my IPHone aside from "Do not disturb", one of them
I use very often titled "Reading" whose goal is when I'm watching or reading
something, I won't receive notifications, except those from family. I'd like to
know is there a way to reorganize these, so that when I go to the control
Center and double-tap on the Focus icon, instead of "Don't Disturb" one, the
"Reading" one would activate by default? Of course it's no bother swiping up or
down to get to the "Reading" focus and double-tap it, but if there's a way to
reorder it so that it can be atop the "Don't Disturb", it'd make my life just a
tab bit more easier!
Though I've got some apps in which the "Reading" focus automatically activates,
but with other apps, I activate manually; I've found (maybe it's a setting I
need to tweek somewhere), that when the app automatically activates the
"Reading" focus, when the screen locks (I've got it set to lock upon 5 minutes
of inactivity), the "Reading" focus no longer works when on the lock screen!
But in those apps in which I manually invoke the focus, even on the locked
screen, it works beautifully!
Thanks in advance.

RE: not grasping autoCorrect

2023-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
I personally cannot stand predictive text. If you want to try autocorrect,
turn off predictive text so you are dealing with one feature.

Supposedly, if there is a misspelled word, you can turn the rotor to misspelled
words and I believe it is a flick left to land on the suggestions.

I'd consider contacting Apple Accessibility.

What you need to do is go into settings, accessibility, spoken content, and
then turn auto correct on. Then it will announce what is in the bubble you
hear. When you hear the word, press the spacebar to activate or put it in your

is good to turn Spoken Content on in General Accessibility settings, but
this isn't a VoiceOver setting, so I don't understand the interplay of the

answer my questions.

Can anybody enlighten me about all this?

RE: Mark's First VoiceOver Experience with iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max Running iOS 17.

2023-09-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hi Marda,

Thank you for posting such an interesting reply to this thread.

It is difficult to believe that, even in 2023, a store rep would treat you
differently than your husband. I continue to hear such things and it truly
saddens me to no end. Such things are detestable.

Sadly, many tech stores attempt to blame the customer rather than doing some
serious troubleshooting.

I'll bet if you took your devices to a carrier store, they would blame Apple.
I, too, have encountered such scenarios. It is awful.

As for the article that states that the 14 models hold up better than the 15
models, I am not surprised.

So, yesterday, while in the store, as I was holding my beloved 14 in one hand
and a 15 in the other, an employee of the store, with whom I have more than a
passing acquaintance, asked, "What do you think of the knew phone?"

In an extremely quiet and somewhat conspiratorial tone I replied, "Honestly, it
feels like a cheap piece of plastic." We both laughed out loud. It was a
wonderful moment.

Again, thank you for posting.

Mark

Subject: Re: Mark's First VoiceOver Experience with iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone
15 Pro Max Running iOS 17.

From an article I read on applevis it seems the voiceover problems are very
intermittent, have happened with five of their editorial team and another user
they know of and aren't easily reproduceable because they don't happen every
time and they happen with really very very few users. Kind of reminds me of
medications that have to report certain side effects that happen one time but
rarely if ever happen. They have to report it so they cover themselves but the
risk of it happening is very very low to any given person. I sort of view the
voiceover issues in 17 this way. I was going to first put it on a backup older
phone as my husband has always done and recommended but even he, generally
cautious and conservative as he is when it comes to such things, has decided to
take the plunge and update his primary phone this weekend. Think I will
probably do the same because my backup phone has apps on it that I like to use
but I don't use it for phone calls so I can't test things like how it will
react on calls so I'm figuring I'll probably download and install it as well on
my primary device. Thinking though of getting another phone. I don't really
want to and it would be a financial hardship but I have been having a lot of
issues with the
SE2022 that I purchased in March. One of them is what appears to be a fairly
common issue, happening to my husband as well with his SE2022 purchased last
October, where the battery not only drains very very quickly even when the
phone isn't being used (like for me a couple of days ago I took it out for the
evening and didn't even use it but it went from 100 percent to 32 percent in
only about five hours. I have a case with another battery so could have
managed but still this is disturbing. Both of us are having a another issue
where the phone gets hot very quickly with minimal use, no heavy gaming or
anything. He has had the same kind of battery issues too whether he has
charged his phone in the more traditional way using the ilightning cable or
with a mag safe battery and charger. I went to the apple store a few weeks ago
for these issues plus another one where I was getting crackling sounds and
seemingly broken up sounds like you'd get when the phone signal is inadequate
or breaking up but those conditions weren't happening, signal strength was
strong and all that. When I took the phone off automaticaly going to
speakerphone it helped some but the problem still persisted. I was hoping
apple would either give me a new battery or a new phone or something since I
have apple care plus but they did neither. They told me it could be a problem
with my carrier or a software issue or a hardware issue (really helpful) and
they were slightly more helpful to my husband who was with me because the guy
actually spoke to him respectfully rather than dismissively and condescendingly
as he did to me. But even so he basically tried to blame us or the carrier. A
totally wasted trip to the store, no resolution of the issue. So I don't use
speakerphone anymore and that helped some. But that doesn't sound like a
carrier issue to me. If it's a software issue the guy told us we might have to
actually take everything off the phone and start totally from scratch. On a
totally unrelated note, I read an interesting article about the new iPhones
that are made of titanium. Yes they are lighter which is neat. But this
article did a drop test and compared a 14 pro to a 15 (the 15 being titanium,
the 14 stainless steel) and let's just say that the titanium didn't hold up
well when dropped compared to the 14. So it makes me wonder because I'm not
hard on phones. I've only dropped it

Sony LinkBuds and Pairing

2023-09-24 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi,

I have a bit of a quirky situation. I have a set of Sony LinkBud wireless
headphones that I’ve used for a couple years with success.

I was going to pair these with my new iPhone but am having a challenge. The
case for the headphones still seems to charge them just fine but if I hold down
the reset button to initiate pairing or reset of the pairing information, for
the listed times for either task, nothing seems to happen.

According to instructions, there should be different LED lights for various
modes. Sighted assistance tells me there is no lighting showing up.

I am hesitant to delete the pairing information from my old phone, where the
headphones still work since it doesn’t seem like so far I’m able to initiate a
new pairing request and or delete existing pairing info from the headphones. So
if I delete the pairing info from the older phone, I’m likely to end up with
headphones that no longer can be used.

Does anyone else have experience with these headphones? The reset button is a
small circular button just to the left of the USB-C port on the back side of
the headphone case.

I’m thinking the answer is no but on the off chance someone knows of some
second way to start a pairing request or reset the pairing info on the
headphones, I thought I’d ask. According to online instructions and what I’ve
done for years, a new pairing request is started by holding the reset button
for five seconds with the headphone case open. A complete factory reset is 15
seconds for the same button.

I’ve done both with success several times over the years.

Kelly

I have not had any problem double tapping on a call in recents and having it immediately call the number. I just tested it again, and it worked fine. Re: Mark's First VoiceOver Experience with iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max Running iOS 17.

2023-09-24 Thread lenron brown
I checked out the 15 pro max in store yesterday, and it is a bit
lighter. Also the button is kind of nice just because you can remap
it. I am still planning on holding off a bit but it might be nice to
upgrade to. At this point the design changes are kind of small so it
looks like the same phone with slight changes that might make a
difference to you. I also think the pro and pro max should have gotten
the faster Usb C cable in the box, but you can buy that one for 29
bucks.
