Re: [lace] Modern v. traditional
Hi All, I usually lurk but... I'm sticking my head up here. There are those of us who are not interested in mathematics in it's pure form, not interested in designing patterns when there are many patterns out there already. We are the people who know what we like, we know if we can work a design in colour, plain, fancy... rather like going into a shop and deciding to buy the skirt in red floral rather than green plain. We like the design and the colour was our choice. This shows that we are all interested in different forms of lace, 3 of us meet up once a week, I love torchon and Bedfordshire, Milanese and honiton, but I usually sit tatting, another of the group works on honiton only, whilst the 'lady of the house' (it's her table we meet round), works on whatever pattern she's come across that appeals to her. None of us design. If everyone designed then there would be nobody to work our designs... they'd be too busy working their own! So, everyone has a personal preference, some people like modern settings, some like traditional settings, some like early laces, some design their own. We can't all be the same! The choices we all make for ourselves are based on the finished article... unless you 'shove it in a cupboard to be ignored'! What would be the point in that?? That'd be like shoving your husband in the wardrobe... only allowing him out on odd occasions... lol!! 'Nuff said, we all know our choices!! [lace] Jeri's emails
Hi all. I don't think it's Jeri's email address that's the problem with people not knowing that she's posted. The challenge for some lies with their own isp (internet service provider). Some isps consider others to be sending spam, and it's not consistently the same ones! Some US isps have problems with UK addresses, some with other countries, some with gmail, yahoo etc. The answer is to reply to Arachne re posts, from anyone! That way people who haven't seen the original can go to the archives and find it! If you're not receiving, harass your isp!! Back down off soap box. [lace] Great Lacemakers
Hi All It is with sadness that I am writing to say that another Great Lacemaker has gone to join her thousands of friends in that great Lacemakers Forum in the sky. Sheila Brown from Essex passed away on Friday morning. I got a call from her daughter a short while ago and volunteered to let people on Arachne know. I know that many of you met her on here as well as in person, and will no doubt share your rememberances of her. I can remember doing the proverbial 'open mouth, insert both feet' I was a new lacemaker at the time (some 10 or so years ago), and was put in touch with Sheila via email regarding some lacemaking equipment and books she was selling for another lacemaker that had 'joined the Great Forum'. During the course of the email conversation I suggested she try lacemaking... sent the email and went to look up some of the books on SMP Lace site. The first thing to come up were... books written by Sheila! I then found her phone number and called! Her reply? 'Oh well, Sheila Brown is a common name isn't it?' A week or so later Agnes & I drove to Essex and had lunch with Sheila and Alan, and returned home with a boot full of lace equipment, books, beads and bobbins! It was the start of a great friendship. We have driven to Walsall, and a number of other places to meet up, look at lace and chat! I was also privileged to be able to attend Alan's funeral, which although it was a sad occasion, gave a number of us the opportunity of sitting and discussing 'all things lace' at the do afterwards! The last time I saw her was a couple of years ago in Solihull at the Christmas Fair. She crept up behind me and made me jump!! Much to her delight of course! I've done Christmas Exchanges with her, and am probably among the last people to receive something from this wonderful and 'missed already' lady, having got her name among the Christmas Exchange in 2016. If anyone wishes to send their condolences I do have her daughters address, and will pass it on privately if you email off list. If you wish to send by email, please email me privately, and I'lll print them out and pass them onto the family on your behalf. Re: [lace] Anne of Green Gables
Hi All This is what Margot had to say: The place to find out about current lacemaking in Canada is: https://lacegazette.com Lacemaking in Maritime Canada started in the 1600s, when that part of Canada was a French colony. We know for sure that the nuns taught Torchon lace at Fortress Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island. (Geography lesson: The Maritimes are the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island in Eastern Canada. Cape Breton Island is part of NS and next door to PEI.) Not much is known about lacemaking after those 3 provinces became British colonies in the 1700s. However, after visiting many museums, small and large, in The Maritimes, I can say that Ive seen lots of tatting and crocheted lace, but no bobbin lace. Lace on clothing from the late 1800s and early 1900s that Ive seen displayed has, without exception, been machine made lace. And because this was, and is, the poor part of Canada, the machine lace has usually been of poor quality. There is a small group of lacemakers in PEI who might have some information. They can be reached through the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette. Hope it helps. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] 150-year old wedding dress
The thing about this story is that the dress was made by a few times gt grandmother for her wedding. It's been worn by many brides since then and was given to the bride by her grandmother for the big day. The dry cleaners had a 'By Royal Appointment', and so were deemed to be a good dry cleaners. However they went bankrupt and all 'assets' were seized... including all the clothing in the place! When they found out they tried to get the dress back only to be told it couldn't be found! Other brides were/are in similar situations. This is why they appealed to social media. Let's hope they are reunited with the dress soon. It was taken away by the sequestrators, and it's hoped it will be reunited with its owners permanently next week. [lace] Color Theory and Thread Conservation
Again from Jeri. Someone, please share this from another ISP, since we've been told AOL and Comcast do not play well together! 1. Color theory taught by embroidery and photography experts includes an explanation of what happens when a black and white photo is made of something that relies on color for impact. Colors of the same value will not show details that may be important to a design. This effect is apparent if you just put red and green of the same value next to each other (as Joy mentions), walk across the room, and squint at them. An understanding of this is of importance to anyone who is making colored lace. If your lace work is going to be photographed, you should understand colors, and visually test them side-by-side before you even begin a project. Americans who belong to IOLI can better understand this by propping up the newest bulletin (Fall 2016, Vol. 37, Number 1), with Janet Blair's lace peacock, and stepping back to view it. She has used 3 blues for the body, and used one of those blues as spots on the green tail. You can see how important the yellow outlining blue spots is. Imagine if this lovely lace was meant to be photographed in black and white! 2. Conservation warning to anyone who is using a spool of thread as a make-shift pin cushion. A long time ago, I wrote to Arachne about sticking needles in a spool of thread, in response to a magazine photograph many lacemakers might have seen. This damages thread throughout a spool or cone enough that thread may break or be weakened throughout layers wherever it has been pierced. This is a habit that can get away from you - perhaps putting needles or pins in thread that will be used at some future time to make lace or sew a seam. The weak spots will be the first to "self destruct", and none of us like to repair lace or re-sew seams. (You may use this cautionary tip in your guild newsletters.) I am responding to this request from Jeri Please, someone, share this memo from another ISP Please make sure you capture The Lace Guild's face page in a permanent place - to remember Jean and David (tuck a paper copy in one of Jean's books, for example). If the face page changes, and Jean gives permission, I will tell you about the black lace tie that is displayed at the top of it. This announcement is a surprise. Jean and David Leader have been a valuable devoted-to-lace team for decades. The amount of volunteer work they do for us is nearly impossible to imagine. Rarely do lace makers have such a vast variety of lace knowledge - and ability to communicate - emanating from one couple. Leader is a most appropriate description of them, as well as being their surname! Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 1/7/2017 5:51:38 P.M. Re: [lace] restoration of antique lace bobbins?
As both a bobbin lacemaker and a tatter, I would say that all items like that are meant to be used. There's something ethereal about using a 'tool' that has seen other hands on it over a number of years. I would repair a spangle that broke, using the original beads where possble. Some friends know that i always say these things are meant to be used, not just stored!! IMHO, it would seem easier to tat the ornament, then attach it to the bangle, as inconspicuously as possible, with fine white thread. But then I know nothing about tatting! We will be decorating the glass exhibit case at the library where we meet for the month of December & the effect of dangling bangle-ornaments at varying heights will be smashing. Re: [lace] Tatted ornaments
Hi Susan Bangle patterns are available for tatters from various sources. Some which are free on the internet are below, and others can be found in some of the dedicated tatters blogs, they could try the likes of Jon Yusoff, Martha Ess, Marilee Rockley to name but a few of the myriad of excellent tatters out there!!. Jane Eborall's blog (http://janeeborall.blogspot.co.uk/) lists other tatting blogs and many an hour can be put to good use looking at them!! I know that both Jane and Jennifer are teaching at Palmetto Fringe soon. They are both travelling from the UK in the next day or so, along with other excellent tatters from the UK! There are some on Jane Eboralls site: http://www.janeeborall.freeservers.com/MotifsSnowflakes.htm Also, some of Jennifer Williams atterns could also fit bangles: http://www.cariad-tatting.co.uk/index.html The Ring of Tatters also produce patterns to fit bangles in their newsletter from time to time! www.ringoftatters.org.uk Sue in East Yorkshire, Lacemaker and Tatter!! Re: [lace] 3D printers
Hmm I do not think it would affect the bobbin turners too much Jane. I, for one, would far sooner use a beautiful hand turned wood or bone bobbin by those bobbin turners out there rather than one made of plastic!! (Thinking here of the likes of Sixpenny Bobbins, Stuart Johnson, Chris Parsons and others whose names do not spring to mind at present) and I have a number of all of their bobbins in use at the moment!!) However, there are lacemakers around who only ever use plastic bobbins each to his own!! Some 'collect' bobbins from certain turners (thinking of the bobbin a month clubs), and I can't really see them stopping unless something 'drastic' happened!! Re: [lace] Question about beads
I would agree with Kathleen here. Bugle beads or beads with chips should be avoided at almost all costs when you are making anything involving beads. The only way to get around the challenge with bugle beads is to put a seed bead at either end of the bugle bead. Then the thread isn't rubbing on the edge of the bugle bead!! Sue in East Yorkshire where it's sunny'ish at the moment!! On 15 Jun 2015, at 10:33, Kathleen Harris wrote: I have not used beads in my lace very often, but I find that bugle beads - the long slim ones - often cut the thread when I am beading! And that is nylon beading thread. I think that bugle beads are cut from a tube and, unless they are very good quality, have sharp edges. It doesn't seem to happen with other beads, which seem to be finished better. Of course you can get an occasional bead with a chip, but that is very rare. It is bugle beads which I tend to avoid, even in beading. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Majorca bobbins
I have friends who live in Majorca, as well as an uncle in Gibraltar, and friends in mainland Spain. It would appear that they use the same style bobbins as mainland Spain! This means that the bobbins are large and fat, for the most part. The other thing to think about is surely as a 'hobby' bobbin lacemaker, we use the style of bobbins which suit us, rather than the other way round! We like a particular style, or bobbin maker, and tend to concentrate on collecting those bobbins, which may be heavier or lighter than others. Just my 'ten pennorth'!! Re: [lace] print on demand
As Susan says, quite a few books have changed over... 2 on a 'lacy theme' that spring to mind are Tatting Collage and Mastering Tatting, both by Lindsay Rogers. I have both of these books and they certainly lay relatively flat and are just as easily handled as any other book! The only other 'binding' that I would 'enjoy' is the idea of Ulrike Voelker where she produced the torchon books in ringbinders. This is also extremely useful to the lacemaker as it also lays flat! On demand book publication in A4 or the american equivalent could be good, as the purchaser could provide her own binder then she or he could colour coordinate according to the type of lace inside the folder!! As for Noelene, if you do produce another book Noelene, we all need to know about it and how to get hold of it! The program is spectacular, to say the least! Pictures of each piece of lace are clear and beautiful, and large enough to be able to see the distinguishing features! (If you used the iPhone version on your iPad, as I did, you could click to increase the size of the pages, but this resulted in a loss of resolution.). The information is organized in several different ways, making it very user friendly. You may also explore many types of grounds found in lace, as well as the definitions of broader types of lace made. Having such a comprehensive source so accessible is wonderful! The best part is that new information can be added as it becomes available to David. For those who already have the phone app, you'll notice an excellent addition on the iPad app: there is a tiny globe in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, and tapping this while looking at a piece of lace will show you a map which indicates where the lace was traditionally made. I love this feature! It is very interesting to see the subtle similarities and differences in laces from various locations. The program is now available in the App Store, and if you have an iPad, you can download it! It is well worth the $2.99! Thanks David, for all of the work that went into this and thank you Jean... Funny isn't it? I taught myself to tat after seeing an elderly man tatting at a craft show around 45 years ago. I got a shuttle, and a basic book (can't remember which one, cept it had an orange cover) and taught myself left handed (shuttle in left, thread in right). I've never had a problem with patterns etc, neither have I with crochet - hook in left, thread in right again. All I have to remember is that if I'm doing something like a jacket, then the right side is the left side. Not a problem as far as I'm concerned. Re: [lace] Easiest for who?
Morning All Ok so, some people have suggested using a mirror to 'teach' left-handers how to knit/sew/crochet/tat etc If you look on the 'net' there are a veritable wealth of videos showing just exactly how to do all of these using either right or left hands Alex says that she taught herself how to tat and crochet right handed so that she can teach it and that if the person was left handed then she struggles When we're making lace do we think which hand to pick up the pin? which hand to use the pricker in? No!! Most people who are left handed adapt very readily to a right hand world... I taught myself to crochet, and tat why?? because I'm left handed! Over the years I've found that most left handers are very adept at 'swapping' around when they see how to do something shown by a right handed person. they have to be, after all they don't teach you separately in school to write because you're left handed do they?? Before you all write in and share your experiences of being made to sit on your left hand and use the 'wrong' one to write with we know about those... LOL. However, we can write, we can read, bake, sew on a button Please don't forget that we've been adapting for years with scissors, tin openers, doors (it annoys my family that the 'handle' on our lounge door is 'left handed' and they catch their knuckles when closing it VBG), we don't complain that much because we accept it! So, if someone really wants to 'learn' they will!! Oh, and, I knit northern english method, with the right hand needle under my arm, and wool in right hand, continentals don't have a problem with wool in left hand, so if someone struggles to learn one method, learn the other!! I crochet left handed, and tat left handed, pins are picked up with the left for bobbin lace, as is the pricker, scissors etc And yes, I use a fork in my left hand and a knife in my right! after all, you use the fork more than you do the knife do right handers struggle with that?? Re: [lace] Teaching children
Hi All Been watching this thread with interest. I am enhanced CRB checked and do hold a current certificate however here in the UK it would only cover me for being a School Crossing Patrol! If I wanted to go into school to 'teach' then I should be CRB checked for that... if I wanted to work with 'vulnerable adults' in other centres again another CRB check would have to be made. Trusteeship of a group registered with the Charities Commission would need another CRB clearance All of which must be paid for by an organisation, and the paperwork can take up to 6 months!! This situation is rather ludicrous, as each of the above checks would be made by the SAME County Council!!! Now where is the sense in that?? IMHO it's a great way of raising extra money! Also, if someone is 'retired' or self-employed, there is NO WAY that they can get their employer to pay for a CRB clearance doesn't enter into the scheme! In other words, whereas I could potentially go into the community to teach lace because I'm 'employed' , someone else who is retired couldn't, unless they could 'persuade' the relevant school or whatever, to pay £60 UKP EACH TIME!!! Separate ones for separate schools/centres etc this is probably why it just ain't gonna happen here in the UK!!
