Dead on, MEK. I got dragged out to a dancehall/soca/dubstep/whatever night the other week by an out of town guest, and it was a ton of fun, and there were some cool sounds going down, for sure. and i have to say that i wrote off dancehall years ago.
I'm actually pretty excited by music these days. I agree with Tom's comments about the revolutions coming from people fxking stuff up, and while I'm not sure how much that is going on, I do feel like there is a new virtuousity with electronics and grooves in a live or semi-improvisational context. It's all across the board, and not really genre-specific. It's not new per se, but I feel like folks like Animal Collective, Sunroof!, Matt Dear's new Big Hands thing, Kieren Hebden & Steve Reid, The Books and even Soil and Pimp Sessions are all pushing stuff forward in pretty exciting new ways.
