As a lifelong cyclist, and former bike shop employee, I was overjoyed at the
sight of the AP
Peddler on the boardwalk. One of the reasons I chose to move to AP was the hope
of
having a friendly and safe place to ride my bike, and I was excited about the
possibility of
finally having a place in NJ where I could ride with a great view, and without
dealing with
cars. Riding along the oceanfront in our area, especially south of AP tends to
be a
nightmare, because of things like diagonal parking and the absolute lack of
bike lanes.
AP really missed an opportunity, in my opinion, when they banned bicycles. And
what
happened to the AP Peddler is terrible. Now, his former shop sits empty, with
broken
windows. Sad.
I've said this before. The banning of bikes was a knee jerk reaction to an
incident. Because
of a few bad apples, all of us responsible cyclists paid the price. When I had
the
opportunity to ride on the boardwalk, I rode slowly, like virtually every other
cyclist I
encountered. I saw parents using the boardwalk to teach their kids how to ride.
Our
boardwalk is sufficiently wide enough to accomodate both bikes and pedestrians.
What would it take to get the rules changed and to have a bike lane added?
By banning bikes because of the kids that weren't being responsible, nothing
was learned.
Kids didn't learn anything about the responsibilities of riding, and they are
then forced out
to the bumpy AP roads to contend with cars. That is one thing i'll never
understand. It's ok
to tell bicyclists to get off the boardwalk for the safty of the pedestrians.
But what about
the safety of the cyclists?
