I believe the same principle could apply in audio ... something may be
transparent alone but improving performance (even inaudibly) is always a
good thing and might add up eventually to an aggregate improvement in
performance which is audible.

Perhaps a better way to put it is that distortion X is transparent and
distortion Y is transparent but distortion X+Y might not be transparent.
