Just as another data point.  I was using my Cobolt talking tape measure 
extensively on the deck project.  It started freaking out, giving bad 
measurements, reseting itself and just behaving badly in general.  It 
definitely had a loose connection, but also seemed to be having other 
issues.  The behavior continued with brand new batteries, making sure the 
connections were tight and all.  I eventually sent it back to Cobolt and 
they fixed and returned it no charge.

I wish I had some electronics skill and I would try and build one of these 
suckers myself, just to see how expensive it would be.  Tom Fowle and I 
have discussed this on and off list and the electronics, such as an 
encoder wheel, are pretty straight forward.  The most expensive part, may 
actually be the sprocketed tape.

Anyway, sometimes you just have to work with what you've got.
