The idea of making something myself is very appealing. But I don't know enough about the parts to make something talk. If you can share some incite on the where and how to, I can think of all kinds of ideas that could be adapted and it wouldn't cost us all a small fortune... ----- Original Message ----- From: Dan Rossi To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, November 25, 2007 10:47 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Cobolt Talking Tape Measure
Just as another data point. I was using my Cobolt talking tape measure extensively on the deck project. It started freaking out, giving bad measurements, reseting itself and just behaving badly in general. It definitely had a loose connection, but also seemed to be having other issues. The behavior continued with brand new batteries, making sure the connections were tight and all. I eventually sent it back to Cobolt and they fixed and returned it no charge. I wish I had some electronics skill and I would try and build one of these suckers myself, just to see how expensive it would be. Tom Fowle and I have discussed this on and off list and the electronics, such as an encoder wheel, are pretty straight forward. The most expensive part, may actually be the sprocketed tape. Anyway, sometimes you just have to work with what you've got. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University.
