I read Gautam's statement as implying that it was not extraordinary for
ordinary Massachusettans to have run into one of their Senators.

Have to agree with Julia here. I've met at least ten without even trying. Four of them I'm on a first name basis with. (Two I ride bikes with, another who married my cousin's widow, and the fourth is in my social/service club.) Two houses ago my rep's office was in the same plaza as my comic dealer. I walk past Santorum's office every day now but have not seen him yet.
