My beer history is a bit weak, but didn't the idea of bottling beer come
quite late? I seem to recall from some Carlsberg history, that the
brewery sold beer by the barrel, and then some local shops bottled some
of it for sale on bottle, but most was consumed from the barrels.
Possibly those bottles were considered a transport method only, and not
suitable for storage? So, the demand for a good long lifetime in bottle
may not have been there until brewing had taken some steps towards
industrialization...
