Malcolm,

Thanks for that list of other projects. I think its interesting to
note that most of the projects you list are rails apps. Before
jumping to Community Engine (about 1 1/2 years ago) I ran an ELGG
implementation. At the time I had to decide between migrating to the
next version of ELGG (I believe 1.0) or rebuilding my site using a
rails project. As you've probably guessed, I chose CE. Future
proofing my work was the biggest decision factor and it seemed like a
framework like rails would offer the most innovation to build on top
of. Based on your list of other projects I think that has proven to
be true.

At the time CE lacked a few features from ELGG that I missed.
Honestly, now I can't even remember which features those were and I
know that both projects have grown much since then. You say that ELGG
may be the best current social networking platform. I can't agree (or
disagree) but in my experience ELGG is the only other software I've
tried that I would consider a serious competitor of CE. I've also
come close to using pinax (based on Django/Python).

> I want to start a social network based on community activism

This is exactly how I would describe my goals as well. I run a CE
site for the Pittsburgh Garden Experiment. Additionally, I would like
to build a website around the transition towns model to support our
local transition initiative.

It looks like you've really done your homework. Whichever platform
you choose, please share your results here. Are there any features
you've found that should serve as inspiration?

Justin
