Malcolm, I ended up not migrating any information over. My ELGG site was rather small and we were going through some other branding changes at the time. I simply launched my CE site on the new domain, let the small community know we were moving, and let the old site die off. I imagine it would be quite difficult to migrate everything over cleanly. In particular ELGG and CE may use different methods for encrypting and salting user passwords. In theory it should be easier to migrate from one rails app to another because you could reuse models and other parts of code. However I've never had to do this either.
