Desert (http://github.com/pivotal/desert) is a gem that allows Rails plugins to mix code, view and migrations with the main Rails app. Much of this functionality is now supported in Rails 3 (Railties/Engines), but some is not. I like their approach of having non-intrusive plugins that add functionality (tentacle<http://github.com/courtenay/tentacle>seems to take this approach too), but it seems like that might also make maintenance and upgrading a little more complicated.
