Don't cross the Rockies, especially this time of year.  Go South, at least
to I-40, preferably to I-10.  Should be able to pick your way along the
valleys and never go above 8500'.  I'll try to get a route from one of my
neighbors who has done it a time or two in a PA-18.  The Contenental
Divide
crosses I-10 about 20 miles west of Deming (which is 75 mi. WNW of El
Paso)
at about 4600'.  The Rockies sort of disappear down here.  Weather is
better
this time of year too.
