And remember that on the lee side of the mountain there is a down-draft to match the one on the windward side. I flew an A36 across the Continental Divide around Granby, CO. With three adults (one a mountain-flying CFI) and a lot of fuel aboard, it was perfectly happy at around 14,000 and shot across without even a by-your-leave.
