It's difficult enough to shock a small engine, and Pulling carb heat sure ain't gonna do it. Most approaches must be "adjusted" to some degree anyway, and most of us are in and out of the throttle to some degree, thereby negating most of the so called "shock cooling" effects of pulling power suddenly at some point. Plus, if we're talking winter operation, the operating temps. will be somewhat cooler to start with. As has been pointed out by myself and many others before, The application of carb heat is a preventative, not a solution. If I wind up High, I sure want to be safe when I pull power off. Pulling heat when entering downwind, gives me that peace of mind. I've never heard of anyone losing an engine as a result of pulling heat, but I sure lost one because I didn't. That was a long time ago, and I Learned a little something about flying from that. (as I peered at the ground from my perch atop several large Maples) Doug
