Pete, I was taught to pull carb heat at cruise rpm (2400) when abeam the
numbers, then pull power back to 2000 rpm, then when at a 45 deg. angle to
the end of the runway pull power back to 1500 rpm, turn base, then turn
final, keeping the power at 1500 rpm until over the fence, then pull power
back to idle and glide to the runway for flare and landing.  I agree with
you, pulling all the way back to 1200 rpm, especially on a cold day could
lead to shock cooling.
