Hi Jan,

Yep, I've just received a private email answering my question @nbusers, requesting to keep the old repository for a commercial product, since they're not ready to upgrade to the latest Apache NetBeans versions.

In order to not interrupt their businesses I can think of two possible solutions:

1) As Geertjan suggests we set up a blog entry with instructions on how to set-up a local Maven repository of theirs (possibly from their already cached $HOME/.m2 artifacts, and possibly shared to their development teams through a network filesystem), a grace period until Sept. 1st and then we drop the repository. I think this is the solution the Apache NetBeans Team should choose.

2) These companies seek for commercial support elsewhere, and it's this commercial support who is responsible for the migration effort and the mainteinance costs (hosting, bandwidth) of the infrastructure. If somebody wants to set up a patreon project for doing this work then I think there will no problem if we add a link to the project from the blog entry.

I'll try to think of some instructions for solution 1 above, as time permits.

Kind regards,
Antonio

Hi Jan,

Nah, I still disagree: we're not to support NetBeans 8.2 (we can't do
that, after all). We could keep on hosting the RELEASE82 artifacts at
OSOUL, I think, even without requesting special permission from them.

The problem would then be knowing which artifacts in the repository
belong to the RELEASE82 version. I have no clue on how to do that. The
repository holds _hundreths_ of _thousands_ of files, I don't think we
can backup the whole repository.

Finally I think nobody is interested in this, I mean, users do not seem

to be worried about this. Nobody has spoken up or requested a backup.

Hm, the last time the repo went down, there surely were complaints:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/netbeans-users/202005.mbox/%3C7d9a959e-3189-cb27-0406-bb7ef467bd0d%40plattform-gmbh.de%3E

I would expect more complaints if we simply drop the repository.

Jan

I imagine companies and users will have those artifacts locally cached
in their $HOME/.m2 directory, and that's probably good enough for them
to keep on building their stuff.

Maybe we could suggest users to keep a backup of their $HOME/.m2
RELEASE82 artifacts, and use that for future builds, before migrating
to
newest NetBeans versions.

Kind regards,
Antonio

Hi,

Well I can't understand why people will complain, after all:

- Oracle has been very kind in hosting the binaries for several
years
now (8.2 was released in Octobre 2016!).
- We've set up a temporary solution that allowed for a smooth
transition
(i.e, the bits.netbeans.org redirection).
- We've put in place a viable/better alternative (i.e., using Maven
Central).

Maybe we could suggest/announce users to upgrade to the latest
(Apache)
NetBeans version, or sugest them to make a backup of the repository
if
they need that for reproducible builds.

That's why I'm asking through a lazy consensus thread: we all agree
that
it's not our mission to keep four-year-old, non-Apache binaries
around,
right?

I am not quite sure it is not our mission - I think our mission is to
support people using NetBeans, and I think we should at least try to
keep
old things running if we can.

Assuming this project cannot at this time host the artifacts on the
Apache
infrastructure (there were talks about it on legal-discuss, but it
didn't
progress too far), I wonder if netbeans.osuosl.org could be a place
to host
at least the Maven repository and at least parts of the last
non-Apache
release (like the zips). Is there someone we could ask?

Thanks,
      Jan

Cheers,
Antonio

But make this decommissioning a notice by Oracle because Apache
NetBeans
is not in charge of the maven artifacts that are on
bits.netbeans.org/maven2 and we will have lots of complains I guess.
