This is the sort of thing that's been done with engineering for at least a couple of decades (that I know of). I've seen it work in companies where the Principal Engineers were motivated and given free reign to experiment, innovate, and most importantly, fail or go down the wrong path. I've also seen it backfire when Principal Engineers treated the position as a corner office where they could just futz around a few hours a day before going home.

Personally, I decided to avoid both management and principal engineer tracks and instead broaden my skills by going to design school. I think there's value in either going "up" or "out" assuming it's a calculated decision. (We'll see how right I am in a few years. :-)
