in the googling to pull up the links I included below, I ran across iasus who
makes throat mics for motorcycle use (with speakers to put in a helmet), but
also make them with an earbud. they look like they are about to release a
bluetooth version

a throat mic combined with a headbones (which has a jack for an external
mic) and earplugs would be a very effective combination. I wish the decibullz
had a jack to allow an external mic, they would be even better.

for listening to things, the higher end Etymotics headphones are good at
blocking outside noise. At a much lower pricepoint Decibulz has molded
earphones that block as well or better than the etymotics and are pretty good
sound. Decibulz is just comeing out with a bluetooth version (the kickstarter
ones haven't shipped yet
https://www.decibullz.com/product/decibullz-wireless/ )
The problem with all of these is that the mic is a 'standard' earphone mic on
the cord, so it's not good at other people hearing you.
Years ago I tried the Jawbone bone-conduction earpieces. They worked well
when they were in place, but I had a horrible time getting it to hold in
place (it needed a lot of pressure against the side of my head to work)
Recently I've been using the headbones bone conduction headphones
http://www.amazon.com/Damson-Audio-DAHB01BK-Conduction-Headphones/dp/B00U8FVVPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454016023&sr=8-1&keywords=headbones
They do not block sound (I wear standard earplugs for that). I find that in
really noisy environments I have to press the left side against my head, and
mute the phone when not talking.
A couple years ago I tried a throat mic like
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Throat-Earpiece-Headset-Samsung/dp/B00PPBNZFQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1454016800&sr=1-3&keywords=throat+mic
but found that with my phone, the audio from the mic was too loud and
distorted badly and my nexus 5 phone didn't have any way to adjust the mic
gain so I couldn't make it work well. It was great at eliminating outside
noise into the mic. It's earpiece was only 'ok', but you could easily wear
earphones over it to block the signal.

For data center work I often use my Etymotics in ear monitors with ordinary
hearing protector ear muffs over them. Very comfortable. While the
Etymotics are not bluetooth, you may want to consider some kind of noise
isolating in ear combined with generic earmuffs.

(I think I want something that goes in/over both ears to try to block
out as much of the background noise as possible.) I realize people in
this group probably have experience with this problem. Any specific
models/brands you like/dislike for this use?
I have always wanted to have an excuse to use a headset like the 3m
Peltor WS100 in the data center:
http://www.amazon.com/3M-Communications-Headset-MT16H21FWS5UM580-Reduction/dp/B00DHVXF2E
Fortunately for my wallet, I never needed them that badly (except twice
on IBM support calls) and now I'm not on the hardware side any longer.
I would be very interested to hear whether anyone has used a full
ear-muff style headset for data center work.
Thanks,
