This is absolute madness - did no one think this system through? So basically we've been told by support now that we are liable for the renewal fee ($9.85) per domain. That means all our work to date (minus commission) means we own Tucows around $800. Great...
This is completely unacceptable. We're going to have to charge our clients for these domains and I'm 99% sure they are going to want to get a refund on the auction payment they made. As support has written to me - "While I understand on an immediate basis it looks like a loss, you as the reseller are gaining something much more valuable then a couple of dollars commission. You're gaining a customer. That opens up the possibility for upselling, renewal years and other revenue streams based on the purchased domain." Sorry but we're not that large to take a continual loss on this system. The chance of these people renewing these com/net/org domains through us is very remote. We buy them wholesale for a price they wouldn't find acceptable. This is the reason we have sold almost none of these extensions through Tucows for the last 5 years. If this is your plan to compensate us then you will have to back it up and lower the domain prices to current market value. Can someone from Tucows come online and confirm that our clients can get their auction payments refunded/ and we can refuse these automatic charges at day -81. The only way I can see us going near this system again is if you put the minimum price back up to $21+. The way I see it, you decided to cut the minimum price at our expense. Probablly because in the past I have just been buying names for myself. Now that I have active end users because of the price drop I will have to goto them and see if they feel obligated to pay the renewal fees that I will be automatically charged for (and after their domain names have already been renewed). What if they decide they don't want to pay? I find this completely unacceptable and I'm sure the end users will too since it isn't spelled out anywhere on the site and the billing for the auction has already been completed. My only choice if they don't want to pay is to take unlock/locking away from the end user accounts and hold the domains hostage. This is all on top of explaining it takes 100 days to get a domain name. Tucows: Why not have the auction for the names AFTER the RGP period is over and be able to deliver the domain name to the end user accounts within 48 hours of the auction close? -Tim Tate ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Nick Wilsdon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,<[email protected]> Subject: Re: [domains-gen] auction proceedure Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2006 17:02:09 +0300 Hi Maxine, > There is nothing in any of the Auction help documentation, which as you know, we as resellers can't modify, that advises the auction bidder they are responsible for the annual renewal payment to the reseller. That is exactly my concern. I could find nothing that indicated I would get an invoice straight after winning/paying for the auction - that needs to be spelled out in very large letters (or preferably take the renewal with the auction fee*). I know our clients are going to be very surprised/angry to hear this if this is the case. The problem we then have is that someone may have won the auction but refuse to pay for the renewal. What happens then? The documentation seems to show that this renewal is taken automatically from our account at day -81? *maybe put a config option into so we can insert our 1 year renewal price into the system but even just taking the base rate would be ok at this point.
