I suspect that the people who would benefit from being able to identify 
an email from this list in real time (without referring to the Auto-file 
log, or using mail actions) vastly outnumber those who would be harmed by 
having four little characters added to the width of the subject line.

In assuming users can refer to the Auto-file log, or that a mail action 
can solve the problem by adding "[CE]" to the subject, or by otherwise 
acting on an email from this list, one is assuming that everybody who 
reads this list is using Emailer to do so. Then you assume that there are 
people *not* using Emailer to read this list, and that their needs 
outweigh the desires of everybody else who wants a convenience common to 
other lists.

Do we need to take a vote?
