Even though I don't have a preference about adding "[CE]" to subject lines, I'd like to point out that it's more than 4 characters that we're talking about. First, there's also a space that needs to be added between "[CE]" and the real subject line. Second, on the lists that I belong to which use the "[listname]" convention, I've seen some replies add "Re: " before the "[listname]" while others add it after the "[listname]". I don't know why this happens -- I presume it's caused by the email applications that people use -- but eventually people start replying to the replies and we end up with "Re: [listname] Re: " in the subject lines. (Yeah, I know, some brain-dead email applications always add an "Re: " to the subject, even if the subject already starts with "Re: ". But I'm talking about smarter email applications that simply disagree about where to put the "Re: ".) Anyway, the redundant "Re: " is an additional 4 characters. Altogether, that's 9 additional characters. Also, I don't sort my emails by their subject lines, but I'm pretty sure that the redundant "Re: " is going to screw up the sorting. >In assuming users can refer to the Auto-file log, or that a mail action >can solve the problem by adding "[CE]" to the subject, or by otherwise >acting on an email from this list, one is assuming that everybody who >reads this list is using Emailer to do so. I don't think this convenience is very common. I belong to two other lists that don't put "[listname]" in the subject line. >Do we need to take a vote? I don't think it would do us any good. For one, we don't know whether the list software supports this feature. For another, we don't know if the listmom would be willing to honor our request. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
