All Shop Vacs built for wet/dry use have a separate airflow 
through the motor.  This keeps water mist out of the motor, 
but I think the real reason is that if one accidentally 
sucks up some oils/solvents/gasoline, it will at least be 
SLIGHTLY less likely to cause an explosion.  I know the 
several Shop Vacs I have had all had separate paths for 
vacuum and motor cooling.
