The critical fact that you're missing here is that you are running an
additional app. GrowlMail and subsequently Mail.app are not the owner
of the windows that pop up on your screen telling you that you've got
new mail. There is an application sitting inside the Growl
PreferencePane that is putting those up on your screen called
GrowlHelperApp. The app as will be available from the MacAppStore will
combine the functionality of 3 separate binaries into a single
process.
