What's the point of sending HTML e-mail just to force a Comic Sans
font upon the poor reader and a few ZapfDingbat icons in front of
phone/fax numbers in the signatue?

Of course there are people that send HTML mail that *adds* information,
but in my experience, they are the exception to the rule.
