But Ron, you did it, and did it beautifully.

The thing I take from the line is that "settling for less than fascination" was already as choosy as that person, when sober, dared to be. There's something intensively sad about that, because it can apply to so much in life: work, partners, dreams, the clothes you wear, everything. We spend so much of our lives looking in the gutter, when we should be staring up at the sky.

And, as you pointed out, even the thing less fascinating eludes us "a few drinks later" (or a few job redundancies later, or a few lost relationships later. . .)
