I actually prefer XML tag extensions over scriptlets. While I am
clearly able to write HTML, that doesn't mean that I enjoy it or want to
do it as part of my job. Similarly, most of our producers understand
basic scripting, but they aren't really interested in being
programmers. An XML JSP implementation that allows us to extend the tag
definitions gives us the perfect opportunity to let people do the jobs
they signed on for. BUT, this is not to say that scriptlets should be
thrown out. Not everyone has the luxury of a design/production staff
that is separate from the development staff. And while I would have
preferred getting the full spec all at once, I think that Sun made the
right choice in releasing the scriptlet part of the spec first.

I would respond to the several claims of 'no proprietary tags' by saying
that you can solve this by making your DTD and jar files available.
What is missing (and should be addressed) is a way to encapsulate a DTD
and the bean code that implements the business logic behind the tag
extensions into a single, portable package. In other words, a DTD/jar
file hybrid of some sort. You'd also probably have to throw XSL or
something like it in there as a binding layer.

Just my $.02,

J
