How many programmers, and system administrators do you think there are
world wide? If you a techy want to chat with another techy about
technology or a specific technology. Where would you go, and what
technology would you use?

Would you look for a projects or developers Facebook page and try to
chat with them there? What if they don't have a Facebook page or
otherwise. How do you reach said developer or interact with said
community in real time?

"IRC was created in 1988. Client software is now available for every
major operating system that supports Internet access. As of April 2011,
the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a
time, with hundreds of thousands of channels operating on a total of
roughly 1,500 servers out of roughly 3,200 servers worldwide."

Again how many people do you think work in technology world wide? Many
more people do not work in technology. Thus while half a million seems
small compared to say Facebooks 500 million or what ever their at now
account wise. That encompasses a much larger community. Yes IRC can be
used for anything, but most non tech people do not use IRC.

Heck just from polling the JaxLUG its clear many people in IT in
Jacksonville think IRC is thing of the past, and no relevance in modern
day technology or community building.

Ignorance is bliss, but I haven't time for that silliness. After all its
not like this is an area known for technology, and peoples comments show
how this area is also severely lacking in tech culture as well.
Definitely an uphill battle, and almost like peeing in the wind.

Ever wonder why first thing Facebook did was move to Palo Alto. What if
they didn't? Why did I leave California thinking that the mindset could
be transplanted else where. Man I am a fool :)
