Participating in discussion (rather than killing it) is "doing
something", isn't it? Or, does it not measure at all on your geek's
street-cred-o-meter? Do I need to patch Gentoo somehow to earn the right
to speak?

And why is disagreeing with you equivalent to "coming against" you? Ask
yourself why, given some people who actively expressed an interest in FB
or any other channel, you did not "step up", harness and recruit their
energy?

The "step up" discussion device is a well-known, passive-aggressive way
to control unwanted discussion. I don't think that if I supported your
"Go IRC or go home!" position, you'd have told me to "step up".

So, if I understand, unless one is in the group actively "stepping up",
whatever that means to you, one shouldn't speak at all?

Yeah, but this is a LINUX user group, no?

Sometimes, you just want to shoot the breeze, in real-time or not.
Sometimes you want to actively broadcast an event. Sometimes, you want
to relate a link or an online article and engender positive discussion.
Building a community is NOT JUST about immediate Q&A via IRC.

That's neat. But, you are missing the point in your desire to keep face.
I don't think anyone is saying we should not have IRC/chat. I like IRC.
I use IRC. But, people are saying we should probably be employing chat
AND more common and/or approachable tools if you want to ensure you are
reaching as many potential members as possible.
