We have the opposite problem in our current 6th grade class. We have
some great out-loud readers who cannot tell you what they read or retain
anything from the previous page. They decode very well, and they have
great fluency. They have no comprehension. It is quite interesting.

Thank you for affirming what I have always beleived... many good readers
are not performers... they are misunderstood if judged by their oral
reading.

I've had kids in my class want to read aloud, and I'll tell them
something

similar - if they want to practice ahead, we can talk, but I won't let

them just do a cold reading. As someone who used to have to focus so
hard

on reading fluently aloud in class that I didn't take in any meaning at

all, I want to avoid having that happen to my students (or was that just

me? hmnmm).
