We have the opposite problem in our current 6th grade class. We have some great out-loud readers who cannot tell you what they read or retain anything from the previous page. They decode very well, and they have great fluency. They have no comprehension. It is quite interesting.

Hi! I've had kids in my class want to read aloud, and I'll tell them something similar - if they want to practice ahead, we can talk, but I won't let them just do a cold reading. As someone who used to have to focus so hard on reading fluently aloud in class that I didn't take in any meaning at all, I want to avoid having that happen to my students (or was that just me? hmnmm).
