Shaw, on the other hand, completely and quickly changed my physical
cable from the junction box to the TV. But when I tried to switch to
their internet service the techie showed up with a modem, couldn't
figure out how to really plug it in to get it working and didn't
know anything about macs (I figured if I'm paying them $69 for
installation, I might as well sit back and have him configure the
modem and my mac). So I phoned up the Shaw techies and the first guy
insisted that their modems and macs 'weren't supported'. Um. OK.
Buy-bye cable internet :-)
This is the exact opposite of my experience. To be fair, Shaw, when
they first came to town with cable internet, contracted out a lot of
the installation work. Here in Powell River, a young guy showed up,
took one look, and said "A Mac? This is going to be easy; I have one
myself!" In 45 min. he'd replaced all the line from the pole to the
devices, and actually "fished" the line down inside the wall from the
attic for the computer.
A few years ago, BC Tel, as it was then, had a "special" to install
extra lines in your house before the new (exorbitant) fee structure
came in. The guy just ran lines from the outside junction box around
the outside of the house, drilling holes through my brand new
fiberglass sundeck and stucco walls. The line was stapled with non-
galvanized staples, which soon rusted. To add insult to injury, the
first hole into my rec room was in the foundation wall. That got
plugged with some type of caulking.
Needless to say, I wasn't at home, and my wife was unaware of what
was going on.
