Charles, Trotsky and other Marxists never counselled political passivity in the greater number of countries which had not arrived at the stage of capitalist collapse and socialist revolution. To the contrary, they stressed the need for political action always and everywhere. But they insisted political action had to conform to the evolving level of consciousness and militancy of the masses, largely shaped by the prevailing power relations between the classes. Most of us took this lesson to heart in our activity in the unions, parties, and movements which promoted the interests of the working class and its allies at home and abroad. Our involvement was based on the understanding that the consciousness of the the workers was primarily advanced though their experience in struggle - in our lifetime, for social reforms and democratic rights - which we encouraged and tried to steer in a revolutionary direction. We considered that standing apart from these struggles and citing Mao and other Marxist texts in an effort to inspire workers with a “communist vision” ran counter to this objective. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
