Truth? Hard to find, I agree, but let me put it another way - something reasonable and believable. The real problem comes about when a certain fact may be obvious to me and most others, and a salesman tries to tell me a bunch of obvious bulls**t - now that makes me damned mad - goodbye, salesman. I've had private sellers try to hand me obvious crap, too. For example, I was getting down on my knees to look at tires on a '91 or '92 124 near York, SC, several years ago; seller says, "All new tires." I could already see that tires were well-worn and no two alike. Same guy tried to tell me stealer had replaced IP, which I had mentioned was leaking. Seller showed me recent "receipt" to "prove" that IP had been replaced - what MB tech had written on receipt was, "Recommend replacing leaking IP $1100."

The one my friend ended up buying was better than the one at Carmax AND it was local and no additional shipping.

THE TRUTH? Forget finding that out. :) Seriously, just make the best deal you can. You can ALWAYS WALK AWAY. The only trick I learned from working 3 years at the dealership and in representing dealerships for the last 8 years is that you don't care what the price is AND you don't care what the trade in value is. The only thing you should be worried about is the difference between the two. If you want the bottom dollar on the car, then they are going to give you squat on the trade in. If you want a high trade in value, then the price of the car is going to be high. As long as you know how much the difference is, then the rest of the numbers are all non-sense. Don't get caught up in those numbers, because the dealer is better at playing that game than you are.

For example, we traded in my wife's 2001 Expedition on a Dodge Charger. First, she wanted a 2008 Dodge with 35,000 miles, but the numbers didn't work because she kept focusing on the trade in value. So, I said, listen I don't care what the price is or the trade in is, I am willing to give you $7500 difference (or some other number around there I can't remember the specifics) between the two. After figuring out that they just had too much money in the red 2008 charger to do that, we ended up buying a 2010 Charger with less miles and with the engine she wanted. I didn't care how much they had it priced at. Because on the red charger they showed us they were giving us $3500 on the trade and on the 2010, they showed us they were giving us $6000. The reality was that they bought the 2010 for less money than they had in the 2008. Even though the asking price for the 2010 was $3000 more than the 2008, we actually got a better deal on the newer lower mileage car.
