Ah, Now I understand this.
I know the distro they were using when I worked with them for a project.
It was suse and not open suse I must stress.
We know Novel is partnering microsoft in what ever best ways.
So the best way they could find to bring back windows is by costing suse higher than windows licenses.
I think some one needs to talk with these people.
I know that even now Mr. Santosh Babu is the head.
Right now I am deeply involved with some work, I can send contact details including his mobile number off the list if some one like Narendra (since he mentioned the wish ) would like to take this further. I had a talk with Uma Shankar and he too had told me that he will get back in a weeks time with all information, since he is not directly involved with ELCOT now.
happy hacking.

*Modifying the specifications, it has said the laptops need to have only
Windows Starter Edition with anti-virus licensed for a year. The plan to
install Linux (Tamil) software has been scrapped, as per the new proposal.
“We wanted the price to be as competitive as possible, and the installation
of open source software was costing us Rs.100 more a machine,” said a top
official in the IT Department.*
