'lsattr' is written to adjust the attributes of files on a "Linux second extended file system" (ext2), which is a file system which is commonly used on linux systems. ext3, which you probably actually use for your linux data partitions (/ & /home/) just adds journaling capabilities to this system, so generally you can use ext2 tools on ext3 file systems.

The point I'm gradually getting to is that the file system you are
accessing is not (from the name!) an ext3 file system. It most likely
uses FAT32 or possibly NTFS, which are the windows file systems. They do have some
attributes but they are very different from ext2 ones and the tool is refusing to
access the windows file system because it knows it can do nothing useful with it.

Just as an aside, the error message that you get when you use Konqueror to transfer files onto a windows partition ("can't change permissions" or something similar) is very much related- konq is trying to set file access permissions on a file system which doesn't support the concept of them!

The closest you can come to changing permissions on a file system which doesn't allow them is to adjust the mount options to allow/disallow various users. This is not very fine-grain and probably not what you're looking for!

I see,
Actually, I,m still on ext2 on this equipement , have been for some time.
I have only just learn't of partimage's abbility to handle journalising file systems, and
have therefore held back from using them. But that is another issue.

No, wait a minute , I'm wrong, come to think about it, downloads2 on this machine is on FAT32 partition, and yes, I'm mistaken, you are quite correct , and so naturally a linux iso file stored on a fat32 partition will not respond to chattr or lsattr. Of course. Stupid me. Do you think if I transfered the file to an ext2 file system situation I could then reset the icon attributes of the iso file ? and if so what part to chattr would do that do you think ? or am I barking up the wrong tree again ?
