Another perspective - doesn't Microsoft *already* EFFECTIVELY give away its desktop environment? The vast majority of new shipments of Windows are OEM installs. Microsoft charges peanuts for these (compared to a retail copy), and as far as the end user can see, they're getting the OS for free along with their new computer. Tell them they can install Linux for free instead (or as well), and they'll respond with 'Why should I bother with that hassle when Windows is working happily?'
