"I don't see any reason why Steve McClaren couldn't be the next West Ham manager. He
hasn't managed a club as yet, but he seems to have all the right credentials and after
being involved in the England set-up is highly respected. If there was going to be a
stumbling block it would be his lack of experience, but going for experience doesn't
always guarantee success. e is a very good coach so there is no problem there and he
has got into the habit of winning things which is always useful."

one or two players and maybe people in the boardroom have spotted things in the
dressing room that they are unhappy with. Maybe they have asked the players 'Have you

'Manchester United are no longer considered odds-on to win the Premiership title next
year, after this week's upheaval at Old Trafford. United are quoted at evens with
online bookmakers Bluesq.com, but in previous years they have been overwhelming
favourites.

Liverpool have superseded usual second-favourites Arsenal, and are quoted at 7/2 to
win their first title since 1990. The Gunners are 9/2. Fulham are 33/1, while Graeme
Souness' Premiership experience probably accounts for Blackburn's price of 100/1,
ahead of established top-flight clubs such as Newcastle, West Ham and Everton.

Derby are strongly tipped to go down with the longest title odds at 750/1, closely
followed by neighbours Leicester (500/1), who suffered a tortuous end to last season
after their FA Cup exit at the hands of Wycombe.'

Posted Monday, May 21, 2001 by bar-knee:
Shareholders United spokesman Oliver Houston said:

"Our desire for Ferguson to stay is much more to do with cold business
reality than it is any notions of sentiment. There will now be serious concern in the
financial markets. If it's one thing they hate, it's uncertainty. The possibility
that the club could start haemorrhaging players and back-room staff is deeply worrying
to investors.

If they were wary of the Busby Syndrome before, the effect of Ferguson
leaving in acrimonious circumstances will surely cast an even longer shadow over any
successor. The Board do seem to have shot themselves in the foot over this.

One anonymous United director was quoted in the press as saying of Sir Alex 'He may be
a good manager but he doesn't exactly sell the shirts, does he?' This could not be
further from the truth. The commercial success of Manchester United - be it TV
revenue, prize money, gate receipts or merchandising - has come as a direct result of
the hard work Ferguson has put in over the last 15 years in producing a winning
football team. In PLC-speak, that is the 'core business', that is the 'product'.

The anonymous detractors would do well not to throw stones in glass houses.
Merchandising at Manchester United has run into difficulties recently. Due to high
prices and a growing distaste for the over-commercialisation of our club, sales in the
UK are down and in the Far East there are many problems with counterfeiting.

This dispute is not about the transfer kitty. It's about politics and personalities.
The Board's stance is not about fears that Ferguson would overshadow a successor, but
rather fears that he would overshadow them."

[22] Bizarre story of the day

>From Ananova

'Burglars in Manchester are causing thousands of pounds of damage breaking into shops
to steal hair dye, iced buns and a cockatoo. Locals say there has been a surge in
bizarre burglaries in the Gorton area of the city over the last month. In one case,
intruders smashed £1,000 worth of security equipment at a biscuit factory to steal
£50-worth of wafers. In another, burglars stole £8,000 worth of bikes and the shop's
pet cockatoo.

Owner of the bike shop David Garbett told the Manchester Evening News: "I'm hoping the
cockatoo will bring their downfall. It does screech a lot and we just hope someone
will hear it."

David Evans, of Gorton-based Two Cities Insurance Services, said: "We have had more
theft claims in the last month than in the past five years."

He said that, in one case, a motorbike shop was burgled but thieves left the thousands
of pounds worth of vehicles and instead made off with just £20 cash. He said: "There
is an absolute and utter theft explosion here but there is no logic to the kinds of
shops targeted,"he said.

Sergeant Damian O'Reilly, of Gorton police, said: "These shops are not attractive
targets to burglars and they do not warrant the amount of effort that is obviously
being put in."

I'm not a bit surprised that other people are interested in Steve, not a bit. He's an

there is no question about black and white; he doesn't carry favours; he's got great
respect from players; he is a terrific coach; he has good observational qualities
which is important and he spots things. He'll do well."

When it was suggested that McClaren was the man to follow Ferguson, he said: "That's
got nothing to do with me. I'm going to look forward to next season. The players would
like to go out and become the first team to win four successive championships and I'm
going to help them try and do that. The important thing is that I regroup this lot,

Full circle

Tottenham Hotspur 3 Manchester United 1
Premier League Saturday 19 May 2001

It was like watching the last decade of your football supporting life pass very slowly
before your eyes. A magnificent decade of unprecedented success instigated by one man
who took hold of our hands and lead us to a Catalonian heaven and back. And now what
does the future hold? Red News had broken the story on the Monday night/Tuesday
morning that the Wizard had said he would walk away from the club at the end of next
season because, in his own words:
United have failed to come up to my expectations. What an indictment - that the club
who have become the richest in the world have failed to come up to the expectations of
the man who has lined their pockets with gold and our trophy cabinet with silver.

When we all met up before this game there were many rumours. Everyone was talking
about the same thing - Alex Ferguson and his rift with the hierarchy at Manchester
United. Even on the train going south even those who were on their way to the Test
Match were talking about it. And the resounding consensus was one of utter disbelief
that United hadn t seen fit to acknowledge the man who has turned the club around,
from being an underachiever into champions, with at least a seat on the board.
Apparently there had been opposition to the appointment. It doesn t take a genius to
work out where that opposition came from now does it?

Without Fergie s unquenchable thirst for success, and without his drive and
leadership, Manchester United would not be in this position of strength. Despite
recent defeats, we have still been untouchable in the Premiership and have enjoyed a
consistency in the European Cup which is the envy of 99.9 percent of football. And if
you want business speak: have become a club brand that is the strongest in the world.
What the PLC don t seem to understand is that you have to be successful on the
football pitch to be able to sell shirts, therefore you have to back the manager. When
you have a manager who has proved himself the most successful of all time in this
country then you have to keep him at all costs. His experience is invaluable
- absolutely priceless. And from our point of view he has been the one person who has
taken notice of the supporters. A true and honest football man and it seems perhaps a
dying breed, as marketing and merchandising appear to be taking control. In actuality
they are only able to do their jobs (in fact they only HAVE jobs) because of Alex
Ferguson and his team. And now he has said he will, sever all ties with the club -
walk away from Manchester United forever. So as we met up in the pubs before the game
it was no wonder that speculation was rife.

The season, for me, had gone full circle. It had been 7am on Vancouver Island as I sat
in Steve Fisher s front room as the season kicked off at an Old Trafford bathed in
sunshine. And there I was in a north London pub with Fish, his daft mate Pete and the
doctor before the final game. Life as a Manchester United supporter has never been
dull. No-one knows what is around the corner, but the one thing that remains constant
is the 'family'. I remember years ago people asking me why I went to football on my
own. But even though I used to arrive at the ground on my own I was then absorbed into
the swaying mass of the Stretford End amongst other members of my adopted family. Now
there are friends everywhere and before, during and after this game the family spirit
loomed large as we closed ranks.

It should have been a celebration. And to some extent it was, but it was also one of
the most arduous and overwhelming experiences ever. We
permutated what we knew and tried to make sense of it. We heard rumour upon rumour -
theory upon theory. Fergie wasn t going to be at the game. He had already left the
club. Or, Fergie was going to be at the game, but hadn t travelled with the team, but
it was to be his last anyway. It felt like a disaster waiting to happen, but as the
afternoon progressed I was so glad I was there to show my support. If the man himself
had not been there word would reach him and let him know what happened.

Down at the ground with 15 minutes to go all seemed relatively normal until we got
inside. We found that the cavernous wasteland behind the stand was strangely empty.
Some had stayed far too long in the pubs, but most were already up top standing ready
for whatever was about to unfurl. Fish and I stood, along with Fiona, in the corner of
the ground with only a narrow gangway separating us from the home fans. The teams
appeared, but no Fergie (we feared the worse). To our surprise ours was a strong
line-up despite not having Barthez, Gary Nev, Wes, Stam, Keane or Becks available. As
the game kicked-off so did we. Every single one of us loves Alex Ferguson we sang.
It spread throughout the United section as though it was out of control, and it went
on and on - and on. For 30 solid minutes we sang, Every single one of us loves Alex
Ferguson. A demonstration of commitment and a show of gratitude to the man who has
given us so much. It bewildered the locals who were stunned int!
o silence. The game was secondary. I couldn t even tell you whether the lads played
well or not.

The singing continued without interruption when they scored their first - broke
briefly as we celebrated Scholes scoring ours, and ended on the half hour with a
rasping and aggressive repetition of, U-NI-TED, U-NI-TED. I hadn t experienced
anything like it since the right-side and the felt-side of the Stretford celebrated at
the start of the '68 - 69 season with: We are the champions - champions of Europe.
The 45 minutes passed me by in a blur of a decade of glorious memories.

There was the odd dissenter amongst the home support of course. An extremely sad and
respectable looking middle-aged man to our left took exception and stood with the
middle finger of one hand raised until he was encouraged to shove it by a helpful
steward. Occasionally it reappeared but all he got from us were smiling stares which
struck home with devastating intensity. He hadn t got a clue what to do about the
embarrasing situation. He had trapped himself as we sang and those around him who
weren t baffled understood our sentiments. The infectious singing even entranced some
of their younger element who were seen to sway to the rhythm whilst mouthing the words
- much
to the distress of their parents. The massed ranks of United swayed too, and as the
singing reached peaks of crescendo the intensity increased and the volume pumped up
once more. The memory will stay with me forever. The sight of so many familiar faces
in the extended United family singing together with such passion was a magnificent
sight and sound.

By half-time our hands were red and swollen and our throats were dry and hoarse, and
below stairs we meet up with others. Each of us passed on our personal sympathies to
Lipstick over his devastating loss - another good Red gone, but not forgotten. Some
may be surprised that he was there at all, but we all know it was right and as his
father would have wished.

By the start of the second half the home crowd had taken up the challenge and for much
of the time they continued where we had left off. It helped their cause that they
scored two more goals and we didnt, but we eventually got going again even if the
first 45 minutes had taken their toll. Several choruses of, If you want to get to
heaven when you die were all that were required. If you want to get to heaven when
you die, you must keep the Red flag flying high. You must wear a red bonnet with f**k
the Scousers on it........ if you want to get to heaven when you die. Along with,
And United said - is that a treble in your cabinet - are you 'avin a larf, are you
'avin' a larf sorted us out.

The locals (and especially the single digit) naturally revelled in their victory as it
probably made their season. A victory against the champions, even if division within
the club was bound to affect the football, would be savoured. The game ended as it had
begun with several more minutes of, Every single one of us loves Alex Ferguson . It
was only at the final whistle that we spotted the Wizard on the touchline, and as he
quickly disappeared down the tunnel we hoped it wouldn t be for his final time in
charge of the United team. had he come over to us we d have known, but thankfully he
didn t. Most, but not all, of the players did come over to us with Mikky Silvestre
staying longest. And as we left the ground chanting, CHAMPIONS - CHAMPIONS we said
our farewells to the 2000-01 season.

Several of us walked back to the tube together. At that time none of us were any the
wiser whether the status quo would stay or go. Rumours still abounded and uncertainty
filled our conversations. Gradually we dispersed, with Fish, Pete and I talking the
tube which was to be yet another tedious experience. My train down had been delayed
and eventually taken out of commission, causing a long wait and a change of engine.
Our tube journey to the game had been circuitous due to line works and the return was
even more so. What a marvellous public transport system - we were glad to be leaving.
I said my goodbyes to my two companions when we reached Marylebone. Their destination
was Milan via Paddington before returning to the clement summer weather of Vancouver
Island.

It wasn t until I was half way home that my phone rang with a message from the doctor
that Fergie had told the press after the game that it was his intention to stay on at
United for one last season in charge. He obviously wasn t going to be forced out by
the money men upstairs. We should have known that he would stay with us so that we
could enjoy one last season together. Maybe we had helped to influence his decision -
who knows?

No matter what happens in the future you can be sure that the United family spirit
will always remain. As football has become a business it has changed immeasurably for
better and for worse. The modern day supporter is vastly different from when I first
went to games and to some extent that is inevitable. Things change but sometimes they
change without due consideration of the past. But the way football differs, as a
business to any other business, is that it depends on football - the game of football.
It also depends on true football people and on the interaction and influence between
the players and the fans. It depends on you and me - and it depends on people like
Alex Ferguson.

Que sera, sera , as the song goes, whatever will be will be - the future s not ours
to see. Que sera sera. But for once I don t agree. It s time for the United family
to look after one of it s own. Each and every one of us who have basked in the success
of the last decade must show our support for the man who has made it possible. Let
your feelings be known - write to Peter Kenyon. It's pay-back time.

Paul

[8] Eric in action
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 21, 2001 by bar-knee:
A small group of us went over to Lens on Sunday to see Eric play in Roger Boli's
testimonial. He's still got it, in every sense. He got a huge reception when
announced to the crowd as the first member of the international team lining up against
Lens. He played brilliantly, scoring the first goal for "The Dream Team" as they were
called on the scoreboard. Sadly he got injured and had to be substituted after about
20 minutes. This prompted a couple of choruses of "Ooh Aah Eric Cantona" from the
French crowd - it was weird hearing 'our' song done properly in a French accent.

Others who played in Eric's team included Jean-Pierre Papin, Sonny Anderson,
Christophe Dugarry, Bernard Lama and a strong contingent of current Premiership
players - Vieira, Desailly, Dacourt and Pires, who scored the second goal to put them
2-0 up. By half time the normal testimonial scoreline had been restored, 3-2 to Lens
with a hat-trick by Roger Boli. During the half-time break we had the rather strange
experience of bumping into a French fan wearing a Leicester City goalkeeper's shirt.
He had Arphexad on the back, so I suppose that explained it - you wouldn't want to
swap it for a Scouse shirt would you.

Unfortunately, due to the match kicking off well over an hour late, we had to leave
just after half time in order to get our train home (maybe the Red News French
correspondent has got the story of the 2nd half). We stayed long enough to see
Zinedine Zidane join the Dream Team as well as Pascal Olmeta - the mad goalie that
Eric brought to a couple of testimonials at OT. Shame we couldn't stay longer and we
left to probable mutterings in French about part time daytrippers. We made our
Shuttle with moments to spare, having totally thrown the British customs official that
checks you on the French side before boarding. He asked where we'd been and why,
"Lens, to see Eric Cantona play" to which he replied in a broad Manc accent "He's my
hero, I support United" and waved us through. We could have smuggled anything and my
choice would have been Zidane - for United of course.

A fantastic day out and here's hoping Eric recovers from what looked like a thigh
strain in time for the Beach Football tournaments.

[5] Tabloid talk
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 21, 2001 by bar-knee:
So you have to laugh at some of the PLC spin taking place. The People yesterday
carried a story why 'FERGIE HAD TO GO', saying that the PLC didn't offer him a role
because 'He wanted Martin Edwards' (Chairman of the club) job', 'a say in star buys',
'voice in club's finances'.

The inference of the story was how out of order he was to be asking for any of these -
suggesting that stories about how worried the suits are of a personality like Fergie
being bigger than them off the pitch in the boardroom - yet the irony is that I doubt
there are many Reds who would not liked to have seen Fergie oust Our Martin and take
on his role and duties.

---------------------------------
[4] Conflicting tabloid reports on Fergie
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 21, 2001 by bar-knee:
This from Tribal soccer and the basis of a Daily Mirror back page headline 'Why Fergie
fell out with United'.

"It's been claimed that the current row between Manchester United boss Sir Alex
Ferguson and the club's board was sparked by an illegal approach for Bayern Munich
left back, Bixente Lizarazu. A source told the Daily Record the United manager
allegedly telephoned Lizarazu last week to discuss a possible transfer. Fergie was
reprimanded by the board after he contacted the Bayern Munich full-back.

Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer was furious and threatened to take
United to FIFA before United board members smoothed things over.

The source said, "Everything that happened at Manchester this week
was about Lizarazu. The player was offered by an agent to Alex
Ferguson. He was told the player was available. Alex called the
player but Bayern found out and they went crazy."

Don't believe the hype in our opinion. It seems that some of the suits are doing their
own leaking and putting their own spin on the story, trying to make Che Govanor look
like the one in the wrong. This wasn't about transfers - but about his and Steve
McLaren's role in the coming year and beyond.

Don't forget that.

The SUN reports on 'Fergie Crisis Talks' early next week in which they suggest he
could still walk out on United this summer as 'some board members are understood to be
furious with Fergie for' his announcement on Friday; although they suggest they will
try to seek a compromise over a future role. We doubt that now - but this meeting with
Our Martin, cuddly Peter and our main man is now crucial. PLC - don't cock this one up
- we will never forgive you if things go from bad to worse next week.

"Like so many of the other players at the club, I honestly felt he would change his

"I just felt it would be a matter of time before he said he had reconsidered his

"It's like the players, in a way. The reason we remain at the club is the burning
desire to maintain the success at the club - and that has evolved from the manager".

[14] Fergie fancies Bayern to win
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, May 20, 2001 by tb:
"I fancied Bayern to win the semi-final because they have picked up more than Real
Madrid in the last year.

"I was reading comments from the Real players in the build-up to the semi and they
were saying they were going to do this and that to Bayern.

"That was a big mistake. Bayern's players were not saying a word. They knew they were
in control of their own destiny and they played a committed game in Munich. I felt
they could have won by six.

"But it'll be very hard against Valencia. The Spaniards don't lose many goals and
generally Bayern don't score many, so it'll be a tight game.

"Bayern lost to us in the final two years ago and they will take that history into
this year's final. But don't forget Valencia lost to Real Madrid in last year's final,
so they know what it is like too.

"It's a difficult one to call, but Bayern will be so hard to beat.

"Owen Hargreaves is their only young player - there are no boys in their team. They
are all men and you are talking about great experience with the likes of Stefan
Effenberg (left).

"To see them win in Madrid didn't surprise me at all."

the speculation.

"Christ, I'm not the only manager who has suffered in that way. I half expected it for
a while actually. I wasn't really holding out too much hope, it wasn't really a shock.

"It's my intention to stay in charge next year, I'm looking forward to it.

"I have a great bunch of players who have shown over the years that they have a
certain character and team spirit that is special. And it's very difficult to get that
and retain it for so long.

"I want to get out with my head held high knowing that I have enjoyed the 16 years
I've spent at this club. That is something worth remembering, not all the various
background stuff that happens, not just at our club but at various clubs.

"I'm not going to let that destroy a wonderful time I've had.

"The majority of the people who came on to the pitch were there to chant for the team.

"It was one or two who acted disorderly and that's what I want to hear from the police

"Once I leave here I'm going to meet with the police and get their report.

"I only have one ambition left in my football career and that is to join Manchester

"Of course I have known about their interest for some time. There has been talk, talk

are no longer interested in selling me.

"It's a problem, because I'm under contract for another year and - while I want to go

According to Bob Cass in the Mail:

He claims:

'Sir Alex, the most successful manager English football has ever known, was prepared
to quit immediately after yesterday's finale to United's Premiership-winning season at
Tottenham.'

'Hasty assurances from chief executive Peter Kenyon late on Friday night that United
were prepared to finance more signings after the £18.5 million purchase of Ruud van
Nistelrooy hauled Ferguson back from the brink'.

This would have led to both Becks and Keane following him according to the report.

He goes on:

But he was so infuriated by United's response to his desire for a continuing role at
Old Trafford - an attitude he believed was insulting - that he was prepared to make
White Hart Lane yesterday his swansong'.

Offer was an insult:

'He believes that the eventual offer made to him after eight months of negotiation was
insulting and derisory. United proposed to give him a minimal period of work in a role
that amounted to little more than a glorified club promoter'.

Kowing the board, this meant he was offered Fred the Red's job

will be in charge for my last year at United and I'm looking forward to that. I've got
a great bunch of players who've got a certain character and team spirit that is
special.'' Ferguson expressed his disappointment at the way his glorious 16-year reign
at Old Trafford will be coming to an end. But he also said the outcome surprised him.
''These things happen in football - I'm not the only manager who's suffered that.''

''I'd half expected it for a while really and I wasn't really building up too much
hope, so honestly it is not too much of a shock. It's a disappointment but you get
over these things because I want to go out with my head held high knowing I've enjoyed
the 16 years I'll have completed at the club. No way am I going to let the background
things that happen at football clubs destroy the wonderful time I've had. It is
important for me that I complete my final year and get on with it.''

Ferguson said he had not yet had time to consider what he will do when he leaves
United, but did not rule out the possibility of taking a managerial post elsewhere,
either in England or abroad. He said: ''I've not ruled out taking a manager's job. I'm
not sure what I'm going to do now but I've got a year to think about it. I'm just not
sure what I'll do because I haven't given it a bit of thought. At this moment in time
I don't know what I'll be doing - I might go into painting or something like that.''

''There are a lot of things I can do, I'm such a talented guy. But I've closed the
door on United and I'm finishing next year. My son has been speaking to Peter Kenyon
for some months but I'd had no particular ideas about what might have happened if I'd
stayed at Old Trafford. That's it closed, there is no mileage for me in this. I made a
statement simply because I want to let people know that I'm going to be working next
year and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.''
