[12] Fergie: Ruud is my No.1
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by redend:
Fergie in the Mirror:

"We were looking at van Nistelrooy in a different light last year. We were saying come
here, take your time, see how you get on with that. He wasn't coming to win leagues
for us. Now he's had a year away he will be wanting to get back on with his career. He
will want to go in the first team.

"I'll be starting with him, I won't have any hesitation there. Although he's been out
of the game a long time he came back and scored goals right away. He has shown his
fitness and saved the Dutch team from elimination from the World Cup by scoring twice
late on against Estonia when they were drawing."

"He is a year older and has shown his character with how he has handled his injury."

"The transfer was always waiting to happen. The injury was no problem, the mobility
was good so we went ahead with the deal."

Ruud will get his first action in a United shirt in a fortnight's time on the Far East
tour where he'll be paired with Andy Cole.

Pay Per View (PPV) viewers are going to have to fork out 8 QUID a game to watch Sky
Digital's pay-per-view Premiership matches next season unless they sign up with a
season ticket to watch all the dross.

[10] Wesley targets Europe
---------------------------------

Wes: "I've always said I want to play for Manchester United and signing this contract,
which keeps me here until 2005, shows that. With me joining everyone else in signing,
it just proves how much we love Manchester United. I just want to play well and hope
to get picked."

"I want to play good football and improve on what I did last year. The European Cup is
the big one and we'll be going for it this season. It's good when new players arrive,
it keeps you on your toes and adds to the competition. It can only make the team
better."

"Ruud looks really good, set to go and very fit."

[9] Euro Law
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by redend:

Any Euro Lawyers out there know the score with the way Real are being propped up? It
looks like they are being artificially supported by the state (well - local
government) which is giving them a competitive advantage over their European
counterparts.

Isn't this supposed to be against EU law? It wasn't allowed with the car industry so
what's the difference. Should United's lawyers be onto the EU about this? Or am I
talking bollocks again? Answers to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[8] A Real Big Spender
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by redend:

Fergie was quoted in the Mirror saying he didn't think we could compete with Real
Madrid in the transfer market.

Fergie: "I think we have come to accept that we can't compete with the buying
mentality of clubs like Real. Their situation is altogether unusual. They were
£160million in debt when their town council go and buy their training ground for
£210million and then build them a new one.

"It is the local council's way of saying they can't afford Real to go bankrupt. It
doesn't matter how ambitious I am, or the club. You can't compete with that sort of
mentality."

[6] Kenyon sounds Veron deal warning
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by redend:
"Deals of this magnitude are never really done until they're done. It's a little
premature to say everything has been agreed, but we are very close to closing the
deal."

It seems Veron is happy with a package of over £70,000-a-week. [ I wouldn't get out of
bed for that.]

"It will be a great signing for United - and one which signals our intention to
challenge strongly both on the domestic front and in the Champions League."

[5] Becks Talks
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by redend:
EPLSoccer.com report that David Beckham and his advisors are set for more contract
talks in the next ten days following two rounds of negotiations over a new
£70,000-a-week four-year deal. United want to speak to Becks again before the squad
leave for a 3 match Far East tour of Kuala Lumpar, Singapore and Bangkok on July 19th.

If he accepts the new terms, Becks will join Juan Sebastian Veron, Keano and Barthez
on a £70,000-a-week package with loyalty bonuses built in.

As shaggy prepares for the stiffs at Real:

"I was 12 years with Liverpool, so it proves I'm the sort of player who likes to be
loyal and I'll be loyal to Madrid, too, by honouring my contract.

"I've had offers, but I've only been here two seasons, and I want to remain much
longer.

"I've had a great time, I love the club and the city, and the fans have been wonderful
to me. Why should I go?"

Will you tell him or shall I

[3] Perez shows true ambition for a football club
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by tb:
As Real President says:

"I've said before that certain players were born to play for Real Madrid and fit
perfectly the characteristics needed to play at this club and Zinedine Zidane is one
such player. I am confident that Zidane will shine even more brightly than before and
that his presence will make this great club even greater. Real Madrid was awarded the
title of the greatest team of the century last year and we are now constructing a Real
Madrid team which will achieve the same in the 21st century."

And we are more concerned with shareholders’ dividends, great!

Ditch the dividend and put it towards purchasing players. If the sheep can do it, so
can we.

"Everything at that club is geared up towards Premiership football. It's a massive
club and Kevin is convinced that he has everything there to take them up and keep them
up. And I believe him."

[1] Bobby on Veron
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, July 10, 2001 by tb:
Sir Bobby Charlton on Veron:

"He's a great player,"

"I hope it goes through alright,".(Ah, just when I allowed myself to get excited)

"Manchester United are expected to bring new players in all the time.

"It's unfortunate for the players already there who have done nothing wrong, but it
keeps the competition there.

"I have thought he was one of the world's great players for a long time."
