Wow.
Is this the same list? Let me see if I am following
along properly...
Last week Steve and I get flamed for not opening the
monster names in the CC. This week the conclusion of
many is that you are an idiot if you dont intertwine
PI and OGC to preserve control (meaning, dont open the
names). I guess I've now been flamed from both sides!
:) Good thing I have a sense of humor.
I will fess up. When I posted my concern that Fausts
database might chill designation of OGC I wasnt
talking about some hypothetical game producer. I was
talking about me. I was sitting here feeling like I
wanted to talk to Steve and see what we could do about
opening the CC names. But then Faust posts his message
and I wonder "hey, wait a minute. If we open the names
then someone could post the whole thing to the net
without any significant hurdle. Is that a good thing?
Does that help OGC? Does that remove the incentive to
designate things OGC liberally? Do I want to open the
names? Hey, maybe I'll post my concern to the list..."
The rest is history (about 200 emails worth of history
anyway).
I support a database for OGL/d20 developers. I dont
think developers should have to pay to get OGC so that
they can use it in their products. And, as I said, I
agree that open content is open content. I was
concerned about the Business ramifications because as
a developer I have to consider those things. What is
the detriment, if any, if this stuff gets posted?
Some people construed my comments and concerns as that
as only wanting to make money. I think those who have
been on the list long enough have seen my real desire
to make OG/d20 work so I wont take those comments
personally. I was torn between my desire to aid Fausts
database (which I think is a good thing) and my need
as a developer to make valid business decisions. So I
posted my concern to the list.
I'm glad for the discussion on the issue, but I do
find it strange that I got blasted from both sides.
No, wait. No I dont. I forgot. This is the d20/OGL
list! :)
Back to me as the developer considering what to do
with future open content: I cant say I have decided.
These past 200 emails sure havent given me the warm
fuzzy feeling to realease everything liberally as OGC.
If anything, it is making me lean towards purposefully
mixing PI with OGC, which is something I had
previously been violently opposed to doing.
