Jeffrey, Strictly speaking, the viral effects of the GPL only come into force when your redistributing. It is entirely possible to distribute a GPL version of your code, the OpenSSL-licensed version of your code, along with instructions to the end user on how to compile and link both together, and not be in violation of either license.
