Largely because it *should* lead to lower overall noise levels and I can then use all my legacy lenses at the focal lengths for which I purchased them.
Aside from that, I believe Pentax should be competing in the 36x24 mm format market, as Nikon, Canon, and Sony all do. Their flagship DSLR's are all in that format. So Pentax *may*, *might*, *probably does* appear to be the slouch of the 4 mfrs. (which of course we know is true in numerous ways). Plus it would provide an upgrade path that was not 645 dependent.
